He held his hand up to the lifeguard saying one more time and the guard nodded his head.
The two of them swam out and waited. “The second wave is coming in hard, let this one pass,” she said. “I want to get the other one.”
“Maybe let them both pass,” he said.
“Nope,” she turned and grabbed the second and he did the same. Both of them were laughing over the sound of the water roaring and crashing. He looked over to his side and saw her slide off and go under.
He jumped off his board to go toward her. They were at standing level at least. She stood up coughing and laughing.
He went and stood in front of her quickly.
“Shit, you lost your top.”
“What?” she asked, looking down.
His eyes dropped too and her hands went up to cover her breasts. Both of their boards were washed up on the beach.
“Follow close behind me and I’ll get your towel.”
Once they got to her bag, he reached in and handed her the towel and she wrapped it around herself and started to laugh so hard she was bent over with it.
He turned and grinned. “Well now, did you have skinny dipping on your list?”
“I didn’t,” she said. “But I can put it there and mark it off somewhat. That was great. And you got a little peep show too. Was that on your list?”
“Seeing your breasts naked is on my mental list,” he said. “Didn’t think it was going to happen so quickly and in public.”
“Then I guess we need to make it the real deal later,” she said, winking at him. “Can you get the boards since the lifeguard is rounding people up to get off the beach and it’s starting to rain?”
He had no choice but to do what she asked, running to get them and bring them back to the rental place.
There was a public bathroom and they both went into their sides, her dancing as she did, but he didn’t ask why and changed into dry clothes.
“Are you hungry?” he asked when they met back outside under the roof.
“That is what you want to do after my statement?”
“We need some nutrients to get through the night the way I want to,” he said.
“Guess that put me in my place,” she said. “Lead the way.”
He was hoping she wouldn’t have agreed to food first, but he wouldn’t go back on his word.
They drove to Hadley’s and noticed a few people leaving.
“It looks busy. Hopefully we won’t have to wait too long. Hudson got engaged here right after Duke bought it.”
“That’s very sweet,” she said. “I did hear about that but didn’t know it was here.”
“Carson,” Hadley said. She was working the hostess stand. “Table for two?”
“Yep,” he said. “Just coming off the beach. This is Laine Connors. Laine, this is Hadley Breaton, she’s engaged to my cousin Duke Raymond.”
“I know who Duke is,” she said. “I’ve been to his restaurant before.”
Laine and Hadley shook hands. “Nice to meet you,” Hadley said. “I’m glad you told me you came from the beach. I thought it was raining harder outside.”
“Just starting,” he said.
