It made sense. His father wouldn’t lie to him. There would be no reason for it. “Yeah,” he said. “I didn’t either.”

“How do you feel about that?”

He shrugged. “What is there to feel?”

“That she didn’t tell you?”

“I understand why,” he said. “She’s an only child of a very overprotective father. One with a lot of wealth who had a seriousaccident in his life. He hired security to be around her her whole life.”

“Security?” his father asked. “Not even Charlie did that for Hailey.”

He laughed. Mitchell and Scott Bond were billionaires but had boys. Maybe they felt they didn’t have to worry as much for that reason.

Hailey Bond though, yeah, Charlie never had security that anyone knew of. He wondered if Eli would for his daughter. He wouldn’t put anything past Eli because he also knew that Eli’s wife was going to be heiress to more money than Carson had ever seen. Maybe even as close to Eli’s potential wealth.

There had been some rumors in the family, small talk, that Bella was in America sent over by the uncle that raised her to keep her hidden from trouble back home in Monaco. Whatever it was seemed resolved because there hadn’t been another murmur said.

Carson went on to explain about the role of those men for Laine to his father. “It was more that she had someone around for her since her father couldn’t be,” he said.

“That makes more sense,” his father said. “It seems as if there is still someone?”

He laughed. “Yeah,” he said. “Me.”

His father smirked. “You know what I mean.”

He sighed. “I do. Laine said she hasn’t talked to this guy in years. That the last time she did was when Roger checked in with her when she moved here. She didn’t need his help, but it was Roger checking in because her father hadn’t talked to her in two days while she was busy moving.”

“You never know what goes through a parent’s head until you are one yourself.”

Something he was looking forward to for sure in the future.

He finally felt like there was someone he could have that life with too.

But he couldn’t rush...even when everything in his body wanted to take off in a sprint.

As much fun as Laine was, he doubted that she would be committing that fast to anyone.

“I hope to find out someday,” he said. “But now Laine wants me to meet her parents.”

“You never have an issue talking to people,” his father said.

“No,” he said. “I don’t. We have to go to her father. I’m waiting for Laine to tell me what Sunday her father has available and then I’ll make it work to whatever day we can get Egan or Lincoln to give us a lift there and back.”

“You’re flying there?” his father asked.

“It’s only an hour from Boston, but added to the ferry and the schedules, it’s more time to work around. More so coming back and waiting on a ferry if we are early or late. A one-hour commute both ways could turn into a really long day of waiting around.”

“I understand,” his father said. “Your mother and I take the helicopter over more than we used to.”

“It’s a convenience,” he said. “I don’t find myself going off the island all that much anymore.”

Who the hell had time? Everything he needed was here. Including the woman he loved.

“If we are going to be here for days, we don’t do it either, but sometimes you need to rush over faster and don’t want to wait.”

He smiled. He knew. He also understood.

“True,” he said. “And I’m sure you need to get ready for surgery. I’m holding you up.”
