“The same thing?” Josie asked.

“How about something that compliments the other?” she asked. “What do you think about that? Any ideas?”

Josie’s face got serious in thought. “Can we each pick a flower and have it cover the canvas? Like your small canvases and then we can do four of them and they could hang together that way or spread out?”

“I think that’s a wonderful idea,” she said. Laine moved over and grabbed smaller canvases. “We can do four flowers that bloom in the same season if you want?”

“Or,” Josie said, “one from each of the four seasons.”

This little girl just let her mind run with things. “That’s even better. You go first.”

They each picked two and got to work on their first.

When their time was up, all four were done. “I love it,” Josie said.

They both made sure their flowers filled the whole canvas, and since they were only eight by eight in size, it was easy enough.

“Next week we can add our highlights to it and make them pop even more.”

Both of them were mixing colors as they’d painted, but she wanted Josie to learn to paint without a sketch and this was a good lesson for the day.

“It was easier than I thought it’d be,” Josie said. “I’m not sure why I always draw it first.”

“You need to do what works for you, but you should learn to try different techniques.”

“Is this how you paint?” Josie asked.

“It is,” she said. “But it took me time to learn to do it too.”

“I can’t tell who did what.”

She turned to see Carson standing in the doorway. “Hey, you,” she said.

He moved over and kissed her. “Hey,” he said. “Hi, Josie.”

“Hi, Carson. My lesson is almost over.”

“I won’t take away from it,” he said. “I just wanted to stop over and say hi to Laine on my way to work.”

They turned when Avery came into the studio next. “Avery,” Josie said. “Laine and I painted together tonight. Come look at our flowers.”

“Those are stunning,” Avery said. “They look very similar.”

“They are supposed to be different and mine aren’t as good as Laine’s.”

“Josie, when I was your age, I couldn’t do what you do. Never compare. We all have our strengths and weaknesses, but when it comes down to it, you need to do what you love and feel and for those reasons only.”

Josie ran and hugged her and then left to go get cleaned up.

“You’re going to be late,” she said to Carson.

“I’ve got to go in in twenty minutes,” he said. “I’m sure you had a long day.”

“It wasn’t all that bad,” she said.

“We’ll get out of your way,” Avery said.

Carson waited until everyone was gone. There was no reason to have Mary working past six when it was slow this time of year and Laine could hear the door open if she needed to. She could see it too from the monitors she had in the back.
