My phone rang and it was Dad. “Hey, Dad. Are you here, now?”

“Yes, Honey. We’re at the entrance.”

“Okay. I’m coming.” We had the gathering at a nice space at the top of a skyscraper owned by RRR. Fancy place that I was sure would do little to improve my parents’ view of Ron, but he had investors, board members, and businessmen to appease too.

I went downstairs and got them. We hugged and went up the elevator. I felt tensed as we moved higher, closer to the meeting. Despite my dread,

"You can stop shitting your pants. We won't bite," Ma said. She must have noticed how on edge I felt. I laughed nervously, rubbing my neck with my hand. "Today is about you, my dear. The album is out, and from what I read, it's all good." She did her research; that was nice.

"We aren't going to ruin this night for you," Dad added. "So don't worry about that. Even though I am not the biggest fan of the guy, I will try to be as nice as possible and give him a fair shake."

That put me at ease.

"Thanks. A fair chance. Give him a fair chance to show you that he's better than what you may think. I know our relationship is unconventional, but I just want you guys to meet him so you won't be worrying about me too much."

"Honey even after meeting him, we'll always be worried about you. You are daughter," Ma replied. What loving parents I had.

I promptly texted Ron to inform him they were on their way through the elevator to at least give him a head start. The worst thing that could happen is my parents reaching the party and seeing him do something they didn't approve of-not that there was much to do here that they would be unhappy with.

We got to the roof of The Gemstone Building which was a greenery area at the top of an incredibly tall building.

"It's a bit chilly," Ma noted.

"Gee, I wonder why," Dad sarcastically replied, causing Ma to smirk at him. I, on the other hand, looked around for my man. I immediately spotted him coming over to us.

Drew had taken over the discussion with the board members or whatever those guys were, giving Ron ample time to meet my parents. I moved to the side as he approached them. Dad had a stoic expression. Damn, but I understood why. He needed to be sure that this man would be the individual capable of taking care of his only daughter… his only child.

“Ma, Dad, this is Ronald Razor,” I introduced them to him. “Ron, these are my parents.”

“It’s an honor to meet you, Mr. and Mrs. Carey,” He cooked up his charm, stretching his hand for a handshake which they individually accepted.

“So, you’re the one that has my daughter so smitten,” Dad said, still not smiling.

“Yes, yes. I know how it looks, Mr. Carey, but I promise you, I only have Maryam’s best interests at heart,” he said. “And I’m also sorry for the venue. We have investors and they prefer lavish places like this to meet and greet, and it was the only way I felt you guys would come.”

“Wait. You organized this because you wanted to meet us?” Ma asked, surprised.

“Of course, I would have preferred us to meet in my home for a meal and just get to know each other, but Maryam told me you two were apprehensive about meeting me.”

“Wow,” Ma glanced at me with an approving look.

“Well, we’re here now, so I would like to know what your intentions are with my daughter?" Dad finally spoke, still unconvinced.

"Well, I would like to spend the rest of my life with her. Could we have a seat and talk some more?" Ron offered.

"Honey, why don't you go and enjoy yourself? I mean, today is about you," Ma said but I got apprehensive.

"Don't worry, it'll be fine," Ron remarked before facing my parents again. "I would love to hear about your complaints and worries, so we can go through them together."

He seemed assured, and I'd given him some tips on how to get on their good graces. Perhaps I needn't overthink it.

"All right. Go easy on him," I warned my parents, playfully. Ma laughed while Dad rolled his eyes. I went on to enjoy my night and I talked with a couple of people with the help of Drew, of course. A lot of them were men and women I didn't know and had never seen before, but I knew I should please them because they were important benefactors to Triple R.

Now and then, I would steal glances at my parents and Ron while they talked. Ron seemed relaxed and in total control. Wow, Ma looked very happy and engaged in the conversation. My dad, on the other hand, seemed neutral which was still positive in my book. He had his hands folded and leaned back with a very blank expression.

I just needed one of them to be on board, but it surprised me that Ma would be the one to be more taken with Ron's charm. When the party had reached its nadir, I finally had time to hang out with them. Joining the trio and sitting next to Ron opposite my parents could see they were in good spirits. The plates on the table also suggested they'd eaten as well, making me happy.

"So, hope you guys are having fun?" I asked but my eyes conveyed the fear.
