The sharp click of my keyboard echoes in the otherwise silent office. The tension is palpable. My jaws clench as I focus on my tasks, aware of the eyes that pretend not to watch me but won't stop looking.

I can’t wait for Jayden to get here so that I can give him a final warning. He might be wealthy, but he can’t always buy his way out of situations that he never cared about when he created them.

I will not let him think he can do whatever he wants and then offer grand gestures to get away with it.

He didn't care when he did what he did, and I would like to keep it that way. I’m tired of him always showing up in my life one way or the other.

Lydia walks toward me and perches at my desk, but I pay her no mind. The rest of the office has finally taken their eyes off me.

“I don't have time for petty gossip, and especially rat me out after you promised not to,” I say finally, still typing away on my keyboard and not looking up at all.

“Hold on. I didn't say anything to anyone,” she says.

I glance up at her to see her looking confused.

“So why was everyone looking at me like that when I walked in?” I ask.

She shrugs, “Maybe they’re just curious. I mean, look at that bouquet. At this point, everyone will ask questions.”

I sigh, partially grateful but also surprised that Lydia hasn't told anyone. I glance at Claire chatting away over the phone, and Jesse typing away on his computer.

“So, you didn't tell Claire?” I ask, and she shakes her head. “Jesse?”

She shakes her head again.

I scoff, “I’m surprised.”

“I’m not a snitch, Carissa,” she argues in her defense. “And I sure as hell don't want to lose my job.”

Fair point–the second one.

“Pamela wants you to check Jayden’s emails for one that says emergency. I can't believe she still won’t talk to you,” Lydia adds, and we both look in Pamela’s direction at once.

“I honestly haven't even noticed. I don't care.” I shrug. “I have more pressing issues right now.”

“You mean like this one?” Lydia gestures at the bouquet and chuckles quietly. “I know I shouldn't put myself in the middle of this, but at the end of the day, I would say you should follow your heart. Don't worry so much about what people will say.”

“It’s more complicated than that right now,” I reply. “I really wish this wasn’t happening to me.”

Lydia laughs. “Girl, what do you mean? Everybody loves some office romance. I wish it could have happened to me.”

I glare at her.

“What?” she protests. “He is hot. Have you guys done it yet?”

“Okay, you’re done.” I dismiss her and try to push her away.

“Come on,” she insists. “Spill the tea. Oh, wait. Were you going to do it in the bathroom and I interrupted?” she gasps.

“Lydia, go away.”

“Naughty girl.” She giggles and walks away.

She managed to lighten my mood a little bit, but I can't promise that I won’t pounce on Jayden and tear him apart the moment he walks in here.

“Follow your heart,” I mutter Lydia’s words to myself and scoff.

But I don't know what my heart wants more right now–to stay away from Jayden or to go back in time and not read his messages. Perhaps it wouldn't hurt so much if I didn't know, right?
