Bleep.
It was my communicator.
I was vaguely aware of it bleeping throughout our journey home. I hadn’t wasted a second looking at it when I could have spent the time looking at her.
I scooped it out of my pants pocket and scanned the screen. I had a bunch of missed calls and messages from Zyod.
His face flashed up onscreen. I slid the button aside and accepted the call. Zyod’s holo floating above the communicator.
“Hey man,” Zyod said. “Where have you been?”
“I’ve been pretty busy,” I said. “Preparing.”
Zyod made a fart sound with his lips.
“Preparing my ass!” he said. “You’ve been deep diving! Down into that juicy pussy you purchased the other week.”
I shook my head. It was a wonder Zyod managed to get any girl to date him speaking the way he did. Of course, he never spoke like that with them present.
“What’s the big emergency?” I said. “If anyone saw the number of misses you left on my communicator, they’d think you have the hots for me.”
“Is it that obvious?” Zyod said. “I can’t help it. Jealousy is a major trait of mine.”
“So, what’s up?”
“You remember Ajer?”
“Your girlfriend? How could I forget her?”
“Well, you know how she works in your family’s head office?”
“Sure. I got her the job.”
“It turns out your mom and the board members have been running interviews for your replacement.”
He might have slugged me in the chest.
“Replace me?” I said. “But I don’t even have the job yet!”
“I guess they’re taking pre-emptive action.”
“No. You’re wrong. Mom said she would give me a month to show I’d changed.”
“It looks like she’s changed her mind.”
This didn’t sound right. It couldn’t be right.
“Are you sure about this?” I said. “They couldn’t have been hiring for a different position?”
“Ajer’s in with the gossip crowd. If they were hiring for something else, she would know.”
My heart was in my throat. It was so unlike my mom to do something like this. Her word was her bond.
I pulled my pants on.
“Thanks for letting me know,” I said.
“No sweat,” Zyod said. “Any chance of a brewski later?”
