Istruggle furiously, but it’s useless. This hulking alien brute has me pinned tight against him as he carries me down the shadowy stone corridor.

Honestly, do they makeallmales out of pure muscle? It’s like grappling with cold marble. I always imagined aliens being small, gray and spindly like in those old movies. These specimens are something else entirely.

I crane my neck, peering desperately back the way we came. Any second now I just know M’ijel will come barreling around that corner, roaring bloody vengeance. He’s astonishingly fast for a beast his size.

I only fear he might put himself in terrible danger while trying to rescue me.

Oh, if only we’d had time for just one more moment together! I replay our last interaction in my mind — me cheering excitedly as we came close to turning the power back on, proud of our efforts, while M’ijel watched indulgently from the gear crank.

If I’d had the slightest inkling of impending abduction, Iwould’ve flung myself into those burly arms for one last scorching kiss! Hindsight can be cruel.

We were so close too! Just a little more time and we could’ve escaped this nightmare maze together. I whisper a little prayer, squeezing my eyes shut. God help him find me swiftly, before this creature decides what he wants to do with his captive!

Honestly, what did I expect waltzing through an uncharted alien maze, stirring up who knows what manner of threats? Curiosity has always been my blessing — and curse.

No! None of that defeatist nonsense! M’ijel taught me better than to give up so easily. He’ll move heaven and earth to get me back safely somehow. I know he will.

Just the thought of seeing his beloved, determined (if usually scowling) face again has me perking up. My despair turns to hope, burning warm and bright in my chest. We can get out of this, together. We always do. I just have to keep my wits until he catches up.

As if summoned, I suddenly spot movement in the corridor behind us. The creature carrying me, for all his rippling muscles, is still slowed down by me. And that gives M’ijel the time he needs to catch up.

My heart leaps into my throat. I’d recognize that hulking silhouette anywhere! He made it! Oh, my darling M’ijel, I knew you wouldn’t fail me!

I’m so overwhelmed with relief I don’t even mind the bruising grip around my waist anymore. Let this lumbering oaf carry me all he wants. He’ll have a nasty shock in store soon enough!

I have to stop myself yelling out joyously to M’ijel and giving away his presence.Patience. Just a little longer…

My lips curve in an irrepressible grin despite everything. We’re going to make it! I can almost see the annoyance onM’ijel’s face as he wonders why I’m smiling like a loon when I’m supposedly a damsel in distress.

He has no idea what awaits the fool who thought to abscond with his girl.Yes, here you come, my dear hero…

But before he can attack, I hear the whirring crackle of electricity as the sword is raised and my captor opens fire.

“M’ijel!” I scream. “Look out!”

M’ijel

Ipound down the stone passage, lungs burning, but not nearly as hot as the fury coursing through my veins.

The very second I lost sight of Zoey, I felt the transformation taking hold again. The fur sprouted from my scales, my teeth became long and serrated once more. My limbs lengthened and I bent down to run on all fours.

I don’t question it — the beast’s heightened senses and reflexes suit my current temper.

Up ahead, I hear Zoey’s cries echo off the bare walls, fueling the predatory obsession consuming rational thought. She’smineand he took her!

The drive to hunt, capture and destroy any challengers thrumming in my altered blood overwhelms all else. I’ll tear that sword-wielding bastard to pieces!

Within minutes, I’m on the male’s heels, Zoey clutched under one arm. I see red, lower my head, and barrel toward him.

“M’ijel! Look out!”

I hear the warning a fraction of a second before the swordreleases an ominous crackle sound, followed by a bolt of lightning.

I dig my heels into the floor and shift direction. The electric static zips over my head, raising every hair on my misshapen body.

I throw myself without thinking to one side just as a second bolt of energy blasts past, scoring the wall in an explosion of sparks that singe my fur.

So he wants to play rough, huh? Good thing I like it dirty.
