“Going to see your girl?”Ford asks as he bags up my to go order.

“Yeah, I’m bringing her dinner.”

He nods, his eyes sliding over to where Cameron, one of the waitresses who works for him, is talking to a customer.

“I’m happy for you,” he says quietly, and I smile.

“Thanks. When are you going to make your move?” I ask, nodding in Cameron’s direction.

“Soon,” he says, and there’s a determined light in his eyes.

I know that feeling. Watching Xavier fall in love with Olive and seeing how happy they are now made me want that with Mira all the more. I’m sure that it’s the same for Ford. He’s had to watch his twin brother, Foster, finally get his girl, and now his closest friends are all settling down too. I’m glad that he’s finally going to go for it with Cameron.

Ford passes me the bag of food, and I wave as I grab it and head out to my Jeep. Mira is working at Wet and Wild tonight, but we’ve been eating in my Jeep behind the building to try to stay warm. Plus, it gives us enough privacy to make out a little bit.

I park in our usual spot and leave the Jeep running so that it’s warm when Mira comes out. I grab my phone and send Mira a text to let her know that I’m outside, and then I wait for my girl.

These moments with her are the brightest spots in my day. I wake up looking forward to seeing her later. I spend all day counting down the hours until I can see her again.

The back door opens, and I sit up straighter, greedy for my first sight of her. She’s wearing jeans and the black Wet and Wild work shirt and pulling on her jacket as she heads over toward my Jeep.

I hop out and smile as she looks at me. She smiles back, but it’s not as bright as usual, and I pause as I reach to open the passenger door for her.

“How’s work going?” I ask her, wondering if something happened tonight.

“Pretty good. We had two bachelorette parties come in, so it’s been busy.”

“That’s good. I got you a burger and fries from Nosh,” I say, and she smiles weakly.

I close the door, hurry over to the driver’s side, and climb in next to her. She’s opening the take-out bag and hands me the first container before she pulls out the second.

“Thanks for dinner,” she says, and even her voice is subdued tonight.

“Is everything okay?” I ask her, starting to get worried.

“Yeah, I’m just tired. It’s been a long day,” she says.

She does look a little tired and I try to let the nagging feeling go as we both dig into our burgers and fries.

She finishes her food quickly and leans back in her seat, letting her head rest against the seat as she closes her eyes. I toss our trash back in the bag and turn to face her more.

“Are you working tomorrow?” I ask her, and she shakes her head.

“No, I have tomorrow and the next day off.”

“Are we just going to be hanging out at home then? I can go to the store tonight and grab some snacks and food so we don’t have to leave the house at all.”

“That sounds amazing… but I need to get some things done around my apartment tomorrow.”

“Tomorrow night then,” I try, and she chews on her bottom lip and looks out the window.

“Maybe. I’ll let you know.”

My stomach cramps, and I realize that she’s pulling back from me.

I try not to panic. After all, she could really need to do stuff at her apartment, or maybe she just wants to sleep in her own bed and decompress.

“Sure,” I say, and I can hear the disappointment in my voice.
