How freaking cool was it that she had felt connected to him?

He opened the door to the security building, and Javan said, “Hey, man. The bosses want to see you in the meeting room downstairs.”

“Ah, okay. Thanks. Did they seem mad?”

He shrugged. “Jupiter’s the one that called. He said the minute you showed back up to send you down. They’re not going to be mad you found your soulmate.”

“No, but they might be mad that I’m trying to get her a job here so I can get to know her.”

“Ah, yeah, they might not be crazy about that. Good luck.”

“Thanks. And thanks again for covering.”

“No worries, you saved me from being on patrol all day.”

Mercer left the office and hustled to the employee cafeteria, where he took the stairs underneath the park and followed a long hall to one of the meeting rooms used by the shifter groups. Jupiter was waiting outside one of the closed doors.

“Is she gone?” he asked.

“Yeah. I’ve got a date with her tonight. I told her I’m working until eight and then I’ll pick her up for dinner.”

“You have to have an escort.”

“Yeah, I know.” It was a rule that no one went anywhere alone. “They can hang back out of sight, right?”

“Definitely. It would be hard to explain why you needed security. The alphas are all in the room. Ready?”

“Yep.” He wasn’t ready, actually, because he wasn’t sure what he’d do if they said they couldn’t give Rhomi a job. If she didn’t find work, she’d have to move and that would be unacceptable.

Jupiter clapped him on the back and opened the door with his free hand.

The alphas were seated around a large oval table. Jupiter closed the door behind them.

Mercer took a seat, and Jupiter joined him. Rhomi’s application was in front of Caesar on the table.

“So tell us what happened,” Caesar said.

Mercer gave a recap of the events of the day, including the plans for the evening.

When he finished speaking, the alphas looked at each other.

Joss, the wolf alpha, said, “It’s not protocol to have a human working at the park unless they’re mated to one of our people and know our secret.”

“I know,” Mercer said. “But with her job situation and also that her parents’ home might sell quickly, I don’t want to lose her.”

Alistair, the elephant alpha, said, “We’d have to be very careful where we put her. She couldn’t have free reign of the park.”

“Right, and you’ll have to move into one of the apartments until you’ve mated her,” Atticus, the gorilla alpha, said.

“Could we offer her an apartment as well?” Mercer asked, hopefully. He didn’t mind moving into one of the eight apartments located in a small building at the back of the park. They were furnished and spacious. No one was living in the apartments at the moment, but they’d been built so that shifters who had human soulmates could bring them to their home before they knew about the living quarters underground or their shifting nature.

“It’s a lot,” Joss said. “A lot of moving parts, a lot of secrets to be careful of.”

Marcus, the bear alpha, said, “It is, but I think it’s worth it. Our people have proven that it doesn’t take long to win our soulmates’ hearts, human or shifter, so I don’t think we’ll have to worry too long about Rhomi being in the park.”

The males all nodded in agreement.

“We can’t have her working in the food area,” Marcus continued. “The topside kitchen has access to our private space, and even with the security systems, it might make her question things.”
