“We can take things however you want to. Fast, slow, medium…you lead, okay? I just want to spend time with you. However that comes.”

“How would you like to take things?”

“I’d like to toss you over my shoulder and find somewhere private.”

His eyes flashed and she swore she heard a soft rumble coming from him, almost like a growl.

Her imagination was on overdrive lately.

“Oh?” she asked, her heart rate kicking up at the prospect.

He cleared his throat and leaned away a little, but took her hands in his. “You’re gorgeous and I like you already. But I want you to know that I respect you too, and I’m not just trying to get what I can from you. I don’t want a single night or some rushed physical encounter. I want you, Rhomi. For all the nights…forever.”

She exhaled softly, her whole body going melty at his words. He was so sincere, she could feel the truth of his words.

She knew right then that she could go as far as she wanted with him physically, all the way or nothing at all, and he’d be happy as long as they were spending time together. Her last boyfriend hadn’t been so kind. He’d wanted her attention to his needs and had wanted what he could carve from her.

Mercer was a different man entirely.

Plus he was sexy as hell.

The cucumber salad, perfectly chilled and covered with a creamy sauce, arrived after their drinks, followed by the meal, which was hands-down the best thing she’d ever had.

“Even better than the burger at the park?” he teased.

“It’s close,” she said.

While they ate, they talked about the park, her new job, and their pasts.

“So my team is family to me now, with Caesar as the father figure. Jupiter’s in charge of the security department, and he’s kind of like a big brother.”

“It sounds like everyone at the park is close,” she said.

“We are for sure, and you’ll be part of that family too.”

She really hoped so. She couldn’t wait to make friends and get to know people, but she was especially looking forward to getting to know Mercer better.

When the meal was over, he paid the check and escorted her to the SUV.

“It’s been a wonderful night,” she said, looking up at him before they got inside. “You’re amazing.”

He gazed down at her for a long moment and then leaned down for a kiss. It was just the briefest of kisses, but it seared her to the core.

“You’re amazing too, sweetheart.”

She sat down and he shut the door. Her heart started to pound again as they made their way to the park.

Once more she wondered, what would the night bring?

ChapterEight

Mercer entered the park through the employee entrance and glanced in the rearview to see the SUV that had been following them—courtesy of the park’s security department—stay at the lot. Rhomi had been none the wiser to the tail. He wasn’t sure how he would explain it anyway. It wasn’t like he could say that the alphas had declared that no one could go anywhere outside the park alone because several of their people had been injured in that way and having a security team following their people was just smart.

“The park is pretty neat at night,” she said, looking out the side window.

“It’s a cool place for sure.”

He stopped at a gate and entered a code. The gate swung open slowly and he moved through, waiting until it closed before he continued on.
