As her fur receded and her body reformed, she breathed out a sigh of relief, so happy to be back in her human form.

The lights blazed on with a loud click followed by a sharp gasp.

“I just saw…you…you’re human?”

ChapterFourteen

After they’d loaded up Rhomi’s furniture and carted it to the thrift store, unloading it in a back storage room to be cataloged and priced for sale, they headed to dinner. Rhomi was in the mood for cheesesteaks, and he knew of a place that served great ones.

They’d eaten cheesesteaks and fresh-cut fries, and while he wouldn’t have minded if it had just been him and Rhomi, he was thankful to have his friends willing to help them out. Plus, they had loads of funny stories about the park, and there wasn’t anything he loved more than hearing Rhomi laugh.

Well, he loved to hear her cry out his name in the throes of passion too. But her sweet laugh was a close second.

They headed back to the park after dinner, stopping at the employee lot to drop off the vehicles.

“Want to walk to the aviary or take a golf cart?” he asked. “We can still head to the petting zoo after, if you’d like.”

The park was closed and all the patrons had been cleared by security.

“I’d love that,” she said. “Let’s walk, it’s a nice night.”

He offered her his arm and they walked into the park from the lot, saying goodbye to the others.

“Do they live in the park too?” she asked.

He cleared his throat, his thoughts racing. “No, they live off-site. The park has other housing, but the newest housing is where you and I are staying.”

Damn, he hated lying to her. But he couldn’t exactly tell her they lived underground. He was already in love with her, even though it had only been a week. She was the sweetest, most amazing female he’d ever met and she held his heart. He was pretty sure that she loved him too, although she hadn’t said the words exactly, just that she was falling for him, which wasn’t quite the same.

Did she love him? Would she keep his secret and ensure their people remained hidden from humans? Would she understand she couldn’t tell anyone, not her best friends or her parents?

“I hope the jackal’s okay,” she said.

“I’m sure it is, or Cael would have called us. I know he’ll periodically check on her.”

The only thing they knew for sure was that the jackal was a female. Cael had drugged her with medication in a hunk of raw beef so he could get her cleaned up, examined, and labs run on her blood.

Once she was at full health, they’d see how she did in the paddock with the wolves.

“It’s nice here at night,” Rhomi said. “It’s quiet.”

“Yep, just the security team making the rounds.”

“Do you think I could see the animals sometime?”

“Which ones?”

“The ones on the safari tour. I’ve never been on something like that. People really love it; the patrons all want to know if their season passes work for the tour too.”

“I can definitely get you on a tour. We just have to schedule one.”

“You’ll come with me?”

“Of course, I wouldn’t miss it. I haven’t been on it in ages, either.”

“That’s awesome,” she said.

“What’s your favorite animal?” he asked.
