Reciting what Jupiter said, Mercer explained why there would be a delay in getting an application for her.

“So there are jobs open?” she asked, her eyes full of hope.

He was inclined to blurt outhell, yes, but instead, he sat next to her and said, “It’s not really my department, but I believe so. What did you do at your last job?”

“I was a receptionist at a pediatrician. When they were taken over by a big corporation, I was let go because they slashed staff budgets and I had only been there six months. I’ve been applying everywhere like crazy but haven’t gotten anywhere.”

“That’s sucks. I’ve heard it’s tough out there.”

“You’re in the security building, so I’m guessing you work in security?”

“Yes,” he said. “I’m on the security team and help people out here in the building, plus I also patrol the park.”

“Sounds nice. But then again, any kind of job sounds nice at this point.”

“I bet.”

Jupiter strode from the room with a piece of paper. He handed it to Rhomi. “Mercer can take that when you’re done, and we’ll see what we can do.” He stared at Mercer for a moment, then said, “I’m going to meet with my boss for a few minutes. I called Javan to have him hang out here, just in case.”

Mercer frowned as he stared at his friend, and then he realized that Jupiter was going to talk to the alphas and, knowing that Mercer wasn’t going to want to let Rhomi leave without trying to spend some time with her, he’d called in Javan to fill in so he could leave his post.

“Thanks.”

Jupiter nodded and left the building.

Mercer got up and dug out a clipboard from underneath the cabinet and handed it, and a pen, to Rhomi. “I should have brought a resume with me, but I just came in here on a whim. I felt like I had to come into this building. That’s weird, isn’t it?” She grimaced.

“No, not at all. You were clearly meant to come in here for a job application, and I’m glad you did.”

He smiled at her, and she visibly relaxed.

When she turned her attention back to the clipboard, he stepped behind the counter and texted his friends in a group chat.

Holy shit guys, my soulmate walked into the security office!

Immediately the replies poured in.

What? No way! That’s so cool, August said.

Is she human?Tarquin asked.

Yep, she is, Mercer replied. She asked if there were job openings. Jupiter is talking to the alphas now. I’m going to ask if she wants to go for a walk around the park with me so I can try to get her phone number.

Awesome, man, Lucius texted. That gives me lots of hope.

Me too, August texted.

Good luck, Tarquin texted.

The door opened as he was tucking his phone into his back pocket, and he saw it was Javan. They greeted each other, and he smiled at Rhomi as he walked past.

“Congrats,” Javan said under his breath.

“Thanks.”

Rhomi stood and brought the clipboard over. It clattered on the counter as she set it down.

“Thanks so much for letting me fill out an application,” she said. “I should probably go catch up to my friends. They’re at the aviary.”
