"She was your wife." The woman repeated.

"And that is something I have to live with. I have a meeting." He pressed the intercom, and his assistant materialized as if by magic. "Kindly see Ms. Givens out."

The woman had stood there staring at him for a few seconds. "She was my only child."

Deacon had picked up the phone, effectively dismissing her.

Now, as he stood there looking out the window, he cursed the fact that she had brought back the memories of her. His therapist had told him that it was healthy to allow the memories to wash over him so that the healing could begin.

He used women. He had a high sex drive and would carefully select one – and that one would not last two weeks. As soon as they started to ask about the status of the relationship, he would end things.

He would never get married again; his trust level was below zero. He needed an heir and was idly thinking of finding someone suitable to carry that heir for him.

Tossing back the drink, he contemplated pouring himself another, but he had a meeting at his club that would require a clear head. Determined to get the unpleasant memories out of his head, he strode over to his desk to continue what he was doing.

The flight had been long and frustrating. The delays from Gatwick airport had stretched from one hour to two, and even though she had found something to occupy her time, her impatience and the rest of the passengers had been palpable.

The airline staff had tried to placate them by plying them with food and beverages, but it was a small comfort, not to mention that the man seated next to her had tried his very best to hit on her.

“You have such lovely skin.” He had told her he had been visiting London to find some relatives. She had tried to ignore him by touching her iPod and reading through some files, but that had not made a difference. When he pointedly told her he was single, she deliberately misread him and said being single was a blessing.

“A beautiful woman like you?” His watery blue eyes had wandered over her face. “You should be with a man who appreciates you and can take care of you.”

Her eyes had flashed at that. “I don’t know what century you are living in, but we poorly women are somehow capable of taking care of ourselves.”

He had not been fazed by the sarcasm and had continued to comment on how thick her hair was and how her eyes reminded him of melted chocolate.

The highlight of the entire flight came when the flight attendant walked over and told her that she had been upgraded to first class. She had almost hugged the woman in gratitude and managed to say heartfelt thanks to her.

“I just had an obnoxious passenger telling me how fortunate I would be to drop by his place after I am through with my duties.” The girl had told her with a wink.

Now she was home, and the house felt warm and welcoming. She was suffering from jetlag combined with anxiety. She would wait until in the morning to call the girls. Right now, she could not deal with the chatter. And besides, she had someone else to call.

Rolling her eyes, she removed her tennis shoes and dumped her case at the closet doors. Digging her phone from her pocket, she touched the number and waited for him to pick up.

“It’s about damn time.” He growled. “I thought I was picking you up from the airport?”

“I decided to grab a cab instead. It’s good to be home, and I am dropping on my feet.”

“I will be around tomorrow first thing.”

“Not too early.”

“I am on the early shift, so you bet your fine ass it is going to be early.”

“David- “

“I have not seen you in two weeks, give me a damn break.” He paused. “Lori says hello.”

“Tell her hello for me too, and tell her to try and keep you in check.”

“As if she could.” He responded with a quick laugh. “I am happy you are back.”

“So am I.”

“Go and sleep, and I will see you first thing in the morning.”
