“Or early.” He glanced at the clock on the bedside table. “I guess we both fell asleep. I meant to wake you so you could leave before now.”

“It’s after two; I must have been exhausted.”

His unfathomable silver eyes watched her, but he did not respond.

“I have to go.”

“Yes.” To her disappointment, he released her immediately and rolled to his feet. “I need to use the facility.” With that, he grabbed his clothes and went into the bathroom.

Sitting up, she hastily swung her legs off the bed and tried to find the rest of her clothing. Her panties and bra were wedged beneath the pillows. Dragging them on, she finished putting on the rest of her clothes.

It occurred to her then that the security downstairs would jump to the right conclusion as to why she had spent half the night inside his office. She could not worry about that now. And her hair- her hands flew to the tangled mass just as he walked back into the room, fully dressed.

“Do you have a brush?”

He gestured to the bathroom.

“Thanks.” Forcing herself to appear nonchalant, she entered the bathroom and closed the doors behind her. She found the brush inside the medicine cabinet and felt strange using something of his. It felt so personal. Taking out the brush and closing the door with a snap, she brushed the tangles, or most of them, out.

The pins were somewhere in his powder blue carpet and would probably be picked up by the cleaners. Twisting the strands at the back of her neck, she tied it into a bun and decided it would have to do.

Taking a breath, she opened the door and saw that the room was empty. Slipping on her ankle-length boots, she went into the office to see him standing by the liquor cabinet.

“I will let you know when I am available.” He had his back turned to her, one hand in his pocket and the other holding a glass of water. He had not bothered to button up his shirt, and she had caught a glimpse of the powerful chest with the furrows of hair when she entered the room.

“I will be waiting with bated breath.”

He turned at the sarcastic note in her sultry voice and realized it was a mistake. He wanted her again and wished they were anywhere except his office so he could urge her to stay.

“You are upset.”

“No.” Picking up her briefcase, she walked towards the doors. “You did say no strings attached.” She held her hand on the gold doorknob before looking at him. “Do I get to call you Deacon?”

A smile touched his sensuous lips and brought the memories rushing back and making her weak.

“When we are in private, yes.”

With a nod, she left, closing the doors behind her.

The smile vanished, and his expression became brooding. He had broken a hell of a lot of rules with her, and it was troubling him. Drinking the water thirstily, he wandered over to sit behind his desk. He had some business out of town, which might be just the thing as he would need to step back.

Letting herself in, she headed straight for the bedroom, stripped down to skin, and went into the shower install. Setting the temperature, she allowed the warm water to pommel her skin, refusing to think of what had happened. She was an adult, and they agreed to the strange relationship.

She could handle it, of course. She was not in the market for a relationship anyway, and the sex was mind-blowing. Turning off the knob, she shoved back the double glass doors and grabbed a towel to wrap around her, and went into the bedroom.

Taking off the towel, she stood in front of the full-length mirror and stared at herself. She looked the same, even though everything had changed. There were marks on her chest and her breasts where he had bit the skin above her nipple.

Turning away from the mirror, she went to put her nightgown on. She had been fortunate when she was leaving. The security had not been at his post, and she had been spared the embarrassment of leaving the corporate office early in the morning. She was climbing into bed when she heard her phone ringing.

Digging into her pocketbook, she saw with a sinking heart that it was her brother, who had called several times.

“David.”

“Good.” He bit out. “You are not in some goddamned ditch or was kidnapped. Where the hell have you been? And don’t tell me home, Del, because I dropped by, and the place was empty. I have been calling you all night!”

“I am sorry.” She closed her eyes wearily as she laid back against the pillows. “I never realized that my phone was turned off.”
