They had stayed friends even though his life had taken him to unprecedented heights. Whenever he was in town, he would reach out to her and start his usual speech of trying to get her to bed with him.

"I have no doubt." She gave him a warm smile. "You look good for a man who is now divorced."

He shrugged broad shoulders. They made quite a couple, and even though they were in one of Kelly Takahashi's restaurants where privacy was assumed and strictly applied, they were getting curious looks.

Delores wore a gorgeous black and white romper showcasing her slender curves. Her hair was loose around her face and tumbled down her back, and her makeup was flawless. She had decided to get rid of her blues by dressing to kill and had accomplished it. "Remind me never to marry a groupie."

"I wondered what you were thinking."

He reached for her left hand and studied the long, elegant fingers before bringing it to his lips, unaware of the reporter armed with his camera at them. "Now that I am unencumbered, we could start going out."

"I don't share, and it has been reported that you are seeing some actress."

"It's just casual. Just think about it, Del. We have been friends since we were kids and know each other very well. I am fabulously rich and can keep you in jewels and silk. I am also a very good lover; the testimonials just keep pouring in." Her white smile flashed and tugged an answering grin.

"You are an ass. What are we having?"

"Shrimp cocktail. I already ordered. Ah, here comes our meal."

The immaculately dressed waitstaff placed the food before them and hesitated at the table. "I apologize for intruding, Mr. Reynolds, but I am a huge fan."

"Always love to meet a fan." Picking up his napkin, he took a pen from his red and blue sports jacket pocket and scribbled his name. "What's your name?"

"Teddy. Theodore Wilks."

"'To the best server at the restaurant. Teddy.' Here you go."

"Thank you so much." With a bow, he stepped back. "I will get you another napkin."

"How does it feel?"

"I want to say you get used to it, but it's been ten years, and I still wonder if this is me. Remember how you, me, and David used to shoot hoops at that local park?"

"I should have known you would be famous." Delores shook her head as she dug into her meal. "You used to beat the tail out of David, and you taught me how to shoot accurately."

"You were a little scrawny with all that hair and braces on your teeth, but you were a fast learner." he grinned at her. "I should have taken what you were offering back then."

"What was I offering?"

"Your fine self." He tugged at a lock of her hair. "I gave you your first kiss."

"And it was icky."

"I have improved drastically. And then, David would have tanned my hide if he knew I had designs on his sister. How is he doing?"

"Happily married and carrying a gun." She laughed at the expression on his handsome face.

"Which means he is armed and dangerous. That guy sure knew how to be the protective brother."

"We protected each other. I am happy to see you, Carter."

"Likewise." He cupped a hand at her cheek, and the delighted reporter clicked the camera on his phone again. "I am surprised some man has not scooped you up yet. Darling, you are gorgeous."

"I have been busy with my career, and speaking of which, I would like to know if you considered what we discussed some time ago."

Dropping his hand, he picked up his wine glass and sipped. "A book. Do you think my life is that interesting?"

"Are you kidding? You are Carter Reynolds, linebacker for the Patriots. You were discovered in high school and have done tremendous work for your neighborhood. You have not forgotten your roots; your Dad is still your manager."
