Orion grinned my way. “I’m hoping so.”

Looking back and forth between us, she said, “Well, I’ll let you guys get to it.” She eyed me, silently ordering me to be on my best behavior. “If there’s anything you guys need, just let me know.”

“Thank you,” I said, standing up, letting her know that I’d gotten her message.

As soon as Vany left my office, Orion said, “Well, out of all the jobs out there in the world, I never would have guessed that you worked for the Devils.”

“I don’t work for the Devils,” I quickly corrected him. “I work for Coltrane Therapy, which happens to have a contract with the NBA.”

His lips twitched, and I could tell that he was trying not to laugh at me.

The asshole.

“Still, I never would have pegged you for working alongside…” He tipped his finger against his lower lip. “What was it? A bunch of sensitive snatch napkins?”

Almost biting my tongue in half, I said, “I understand if you’d like a different therapist-”

“Oh, baby, not on your life,” he quickly rushed out, smirking like the cat that ate the canary. “Even without our romantic history to help make this easier, Vany said that you’re the best, and you’re out of your mind if you think that I’m not going to insist on the best.”

“This is my job, Mr. Knight,” I pointed out.

“And this is my fucking career,” he shot back, stepping further into the room. “We’re on our way to winning back-to-back championships, and I am not going to let you ruin that for me.”

“Meruin it?” I squawked. “What aboutyou?”

“I’m not a basketball-player-hating menace,” he scoffed.

I could feel my dislike for the guy radiating off me in waves. “When did your shoulder first start bothering you?” I asked, and his back immediately straightened. “Yeah, that’s what I thought.” I walked around my desk, refusing to let Orion Knight intimidate me. “Donottalk to me about how important your career is when you’ve waited until the last possible second to get your shoulder checked out. Or is your ego so big that we’re going to have problems?”

“Looks like we already have problems,” he shot back.

“Luckily for you, I don’t have to like my patients to give them my best,” I countered.

“First, you hate Raven when the guy hasn’t done a goddamn thing to you,” he said. “And now me. Do you just hate men in general?”

“Unlike Raven King, I’m just not particularly impressed by baseball and basketball players,” I informed him. “You guys are so goddamn vain that the entire world coddles you and your egos like one bad commentary might send you crying into a corner.”

Orion’s head reared back, his brows high. “Did you just call us pussies?”

“If the tampon fits…”

The six-foot-six asshole stepped to me until he was towering over my entire frame. “Baby, you better watch who you talk to like that,” he warned. “Your boyfriend might be okay with you digging your high heel into his neck, but I’m not your boyfriend.”

Ignoring how that was the second time that he had called me baby, I asked, “What the hell are you talking about? What boyfriend?”

“The guy that had to carry your psychotic ass out of Your Choice the other day,” he answered. “To which the man has my sympathies, really.”

I shot him a look, letting him know exactly what I thought of his jokes. “Harley isn’t my boyfriend,” I corrected, not even sure why I was explaining myself to him. “He’s my best friend.”

If it was possible, Orion stepped closer to me. “Then he deserves hazard pay for that role,” he said, and I wanted to smack him. “You’re a fucking lunatic.”

“Why?” I challenged. “Because I’m not bowing down to you like all the groupies that you’re used to? Because I won’t suck your dick and proclaim you as the best point guard of all time.”

“Christ, you got a mouth on you,” he growled.

“You’re not a god, Orion Knight,” I spewed. “And even if you were, you’re notmygod.”

“Is everything okay in here?”
