“You can sit wherever you want,” the waitress says. “Menus are on the table.”

I’d rather go to Nova’s apartment to see if she’ll talk to me, but I doubt she’d answer the door. Ted wouldn’t either. He’d probably yell at me for being there too early in the morning. I think the only way Nova will talk to me is if show up where she works, either here or at the rink.

Jace and I go sit at the counter and take a menu from the metal stand.

“So what are you gonna do?” Jace asks.

“I’m not sure.”

“Where do you think she was last night?”

“In her apartment. She just didn’t answer the door because she didn’t want to talk to me. I’m guessing Ted wasn’t home. If he was, he would’ve yelled at me to go away.”

Jace sets his menu down. “Why are you trying so hard with this girl? You’ve got more drama with her than you did with Paris. And at least with Paris you didn’t have to deal with your parents giving you a hard time.”

“I don’t want Paris. I want Nova.” I pause. “I love her.”

Jace laughs a little. “You don’t love her. You’re obsessed with her, which you think means you love her.”

“I’m not obsessed with her. I love her. I have since we were kids.” I set my menu back in the metal stand. “I don’t expect you to understand this. Nobody can. Nova and I went through something that bonded us in a way I can’t explain, but it’s something I’ll never feel with anyone else.”

The waitress appears behind the counter, holding her order pad. “What can I get you?”

“French toast with a side of scrambled eggs,” Jace says.

“I’ll have the ham and cheese omelet,” I tell her.

She jots down the order then smiles at us. “I’m Mara. I’ll get you some waters. Let me know if you need anything else.”

She walks over to a faucet behind the counter and fills two glasses with water, then comes back and sets them in front of us.

“How long have you known Nova?” I ask her.

“Probably about six months? I can’t remember, but I think it’s close to that. Why?”

“I just wondered. When’s the last time you heard from her?”

She eyes me suspiciously, like my question implies something. “I saw her at work on Wednesday.”

“And she seemed okay? Like nothing was wrong?”

She puts her hand on her hip. “What’s going on? Did something happen to Nova?”

“Just ignore him,” Jace says. “He always asks stupid questions like that when a girl he likes doesn’t call him back.”

Mara looks at Jace, then back at me. “If she’s sick, she probably turned her phone off so she could sleep.”

“Yeah, you’re probably right.”

“I’ll go put your order in.” She goes through the door to the kitchen.

Jace turns to me. “What the fuck, man?”

“What? I was just asking her some questions.”

“You made it sound like Nova’s dead and you’re trying to figure out who did it. I think the waitress thoughtyoudid it from the way you were asking.”

“She didn’t think that.”
