Page 111 of Trusting Easton

“Where are we going?”

“I don’t know. I just have to get out of here.” I take my coat from the closet and wait at the door.

“Easton!” my mom yells, racing up to me. “Where are you going?”

“Out, and I don’t know when I’ll back. OrifI’ll be back.”

“Easton, don’t say that.” She’s tearing up again, but I don’t feel sorry for her. She never should’ve kept this from me.

“You lied to me. You and Dad lied to me from the moment you came and got me at the foster home. How could I trust you after that?”

“Honey, don’t go. We need to talk about this.”

Nova comes up next to me. I take her hand and go out the door.

“Easton!” my mom yells, standing on the porch.

Nova and I get in the Jeep and I take off, speeding down the road.

“Where are we gonna go?” Nova asks. “It’s Sunday night. Everything’s going to be closing soon.”

I keep driving, then stop abruptly and pull into Jace’s driveway. “Wait here.” I jump out of the Jeep and run up to Jace’s house. I ring the bell.

Jace answers. “Hey, man, what are you doing here?”

“Is anyone using the fishing cabin?”

“No. It’s winter. It doesn’t have heat.”

“I don’t give a shit. Give me the key.”

“What?” He looks at me like I’m crazy.

“I said give me the key!”

“You’re going to the cabin? Now?”

“Just give me the fucking key!”

“Fine. I’ll be right back.”

The cabin is an hour from here. It’s a fishing cabin we go to when the weather’s warm. Jace’s family has another cabin farther north that’s a lot nicer, but I don’t want to drive that far and I don’t think Jace has a key for it. His dad took it from him after Jace had a party there and trashed the place.

He comes back and hands me the key. “You gonna tell me what’s going on?”

“I need to get away. Don’t tell my parents where I’m at. You do and our friendship is over.”

He cocks his head. “Are you in trouble? Like with the cops?”

“No. I had a fight with my parents and can’t be around them right now.”

He looks behind me at the Jeep. “Is that Nova?”

“Yeah. I’ll see ya later.” I take off.

“Are you gonna be at school tomorrow?” he yells.

I pretend I didn’t hear him and get back in the Jeep. I don’t know if I’ll go to school tomorrow. If I did, I wouldn’t be able to pay attention in class. I need time to process this. There’s so much to think about, so much I didn’t know.
