Page 121 of Trusting Easton

“That’s just wrong.”

“It’s what they do to get people to watch. I can kind of understand why your parents changed your name.”

“I still feel like I should be Sean, not Easton, especially when I’m with you.”

“You could always go back to Sean. It’s still your name. You just have to get people to start calling you that.”

“I’ll think about it.”

I lean over and kiss his cheek. “I love you, Sean.”

He smiles. “I love you, too.”

Easton’s feeling lost and confused, which I totally get. His parents lied to him and he feels betrayed, like he can’t trust them. He just needs time to get over this. When he does, he’ll realize his parents aren’t horrible people. I actually really like his mom. I’m not so sure about his dad. In the short time I’ve spent with him, I don’t like him.

“Let’s go out tonight,”I say to Nova as she comes up the stairs from the basement.

“Where?”

I put my arm around her as we walk to the living room. “Would you be open to going over to Jace’s house? I know you hate him, but he’s really not that bad. He was just being an ass that night at the diner. Liza will be there. She’s nice. You might like her.”

“I guess we could do that. Paris won’t be there, will she?”

“No, she’s dating Cam, one of the guys on the hockey team. He’s as obsessed with his looks as she is. They’re a good match.”

“So she’s given up trying to get you back?”

“For now.”

“What does that mean?” Nova asks, sounding angry.

“Relax.” I stop and kiss her. “As long as you don’t break up with me, she’ll leave me alone.” I laugh. “Paris is scared of you. She’s not gonna piss you off.”

“Why is she scared of me?”

“Because of where you’re from, where you go to school. She thinks girls like you know how to fight and will beat her up.”

“Idoknow how to fight, and Iwillbeat her up if she gets near you.”

I smile. “You’re finally acting like you want me. That’s a change. You used to tell me to get lost.”

“I’ve wanted you the whole time. I just didn’t think I could have you. I’m still not sure if I can with you going away to college.”

“We’ll figure it out.” I kiss her.

“Stop doing that in the house,” Jenna says as she runs down the stairs. “It’s gross.” She continues to the dining room.

“Dinner’s ready,” my mom says, going past us holding a casserole dish.

“Are you sick of these family dinners yet?” I ask Nova.

“No, I kind of like them.”

It’s Thursday, four days after I found out all the family secrets. I’ve cooled down a lot since then. I’m even talking to my dad again, mostly because he agreed to let Nova stay here until we find her a place. He was originally going to make her leave tomorrow, but my mom talked him into letting her stay. My mom and I want her to stay through Christmas, but my dad wants her gone by then, insisting the house will be too crowded with both sets of grandparents here. But only his parents are staying with us. My mom’s parents live in town. I asked her if they could take Nova, but they live in a community for people 55 and over. People Nova’s age aren’t allowed to live there, even for a few months.
