“She loved playing with trucks when she was a kid,” I tell Jace.

“I tried to take them apart too,” she says.

“That’s right, you did.” I turn to her. “Are you really considering this?”

She shrugs. “Maybe. It pays a lot better than cleaning up tables. And your mom said she’d help me do the application if I decide to take a class.”

When did she talk to my mom about this? And why didn’t she tell me? I was hoping she’d consider going to Madison with me, but now it sounds like she might stay here.

An hour later, we leave Jace’s house and go back to mine. Nova goes to the basement to get ready for bed.

“I didn’t hear you come home,” my mom says, catching me before I go upstairs.

“We just got here. Hey, did you talk to Nova about taking classes?”

“Just briefly. I told her I’d help her if she decided to enroll.”

“Enroll where?”

“At one of the community colleges. Why? Did she mention it to you?”

“Yeah, and I think she might do it.”

“That’s good, isn’t it?”

“It is, but I was hoping she’d go to Madison with me, not stay here.”

“They have schools there she could go to.” She pats my shoulder. “Don’t worry about it. I’m working on it.”

“Working on what?”

She goes past me up the stairs. “See you in the morning!”

I go up to my room and text Nova. “Goodnight. I love you.”

“I love you too.”

I’m afraid that’s how next year will be, texting each other instead of being together. I don’t want to go four years living in different cities. I know it’s just over an hour away, but that’s still too far. It means I’ll only see her on weekends, or less than that if she’s working.

We need to find a way to be together. We had 12 years apart. I don’t want another four.

In the morningI go in the kitchen for breakfast and see my dad there. He’s usually at work by six and it’s after seven.

“What are you doing home?” I ask.

“I decided to go in later today,” he says, pouring his coffee. “You ready for the game tonight?”

“Yeah. Are you going to be there?”

“Of course. I think I’ll take your mom and Jenna for dinner before the game.”

“And Nova,” my mom says.

Nova’s at the table eating a bowl of cereal.

“Hey.” I smile at her.
