“Do you know anyone who might’ve seen her?”

“Rielle might have.” She looks around. “Oh! There she is. Rielle!” She waves over a girl who looks like she’s pregnant. She’s wearing a coat, but it’s open in front and I can see her rounded belly. This must be the friend Nova told me about. She said they were best friends until Rielle got pregnant and started spending all her time with the lady adopting her baby.

“What’s up?” Rielle says to the girl, glancing at me.

“This guy’s looking for Nova.”

“Why?” Rielle says in a suspicious tone.

“I haven’t heard from her in almost a week and I’m getting worried.”

“Wait, are you…” Rielle pauses, like she’s trying to think of my name.

“Easton.”

“I’ll let you guys talk,” the other girl says. “I have to go.”

She takes off, leaving me with Rielle, who still seems wary of me, although it sounds like Nova told her about me. But if she told her I’m a lying asshole who was using her to cheat on my girlfriend, then I understand why Rielle’s looking at me that way.

“I just need to talk to her,” I say. “Did you see her today? Was she at school?”

“No. I haven’t seen her all week.”

“But she’s still in school, right?”

“I shouldn’t be talking to you.” She goes past me.

“Rielle, wait!” I catch up to her. “I went to her apartment and they said she moved. Do you know where?”

“No.” She keeps walking.

I follow beside her. “I heard about Ted. I know he died, and that Nova had to leave the apartment. So where is she? Is she staying with a friend?”

Rielle stops and turns to me. “I don’t know anything, okay? And I don’t have time for this. I have a doctor’s appointment in an hour and I need to stop at home first.”

She keeps looking away, refusing to look me in the eye, which makes me wonder if she knows something about Nova she isn’t telling me.

“I have to go,” she says, continuing to the parking lot.

“I need to find her!” I yell so she’ll hear me above the noise of all the cars leaving. The people here drive old cars with loud engines. “I love her!”

Rielle stops, then turns back and storms up to me. “You cheat on her and lie to her and call that love?” She huffs. “Just leave her alone. She’s better off without you. You may be rich, but you’re no better than all the other assholes she’s dated.”

“So youhaveseen her.”

Rielle doesn’t answer.

“I never cheated on her. My ex was at my house when Nova came by and she assumed that meant I was still with her, but I’m not. That’s why I need to talk to her. She took off before I had a chance to explain.”

Rielle rolls her eyes. “Your ex just hangs out at your house? You should come up with a better story because Nova would never believe that, not that she’ll ever talk to you again after you lied to her.”

“What exactly did she tell you?”

“Not much. We didn’t talk long. She just said you lied and cheated on her, and that you two were over.”

“She said we’re over?” I say, my heart sinking. “Our relationship or our friendship?”

“She didn’t say, but I assume both. Just go back to your ex and leave her alone.”
