Page 3 of Trusting Easton

Nova probably hates me now. She always assumes the worst because that’s what life’s given her. I’ve been trying to give her hope and prove to her things can be better, and then this happens. She finds out nobody in my life knows about her and sees my ex-girlfriend here, wearing my sweatshirt, on a day I told Nova was only for family. She saw Jace here, too. He’s not staying. He just stopped by to say hi to everyone. Jace and I have been friends for so long that he’s treated like family. He can stop by whenever he wants and my parents don’t get mad. His parents are the same way with me. But Nova doesn’t know that, so she was probably confused seeing him here.

“We’ll resume this conversation later,” my dad says. “We’re not letting this disrupt our Thanksgiving.”

“I’m not staying,” I tell him. “I need to go find Nova.”

“Easton, I have had enough of this!” my dad yells. “You are not going to see that girl! You are going to spend today with your family!”

“Stephen, calm down,” my mom says, holding his arm.

“You’re in so much trouble,” Jenna says, smiling at me.

I can’t take another second of this. I storm out of the office and go back to the living room. My grandparents are sitting there, watching TV. I walk to the window and see Jace’s car is gone, leaving just my grandfather’s car blocking the way for my Jeep to get out.

“Grandpa, can you move your car?”

He glances at me. “Sorry, Easton, but your father feels it’s best if I don’t.”

You’ve gotta be kidding me. My dad is using my grandparents to block my Jeep so I can’t leave?

“Easton, who was that girl?” my grandma asks. “Did you know her?”

“Yes. She’s a friend and she needs my help. Grandpa, would you please just give me your keys? I need to go see her.”

“You will do no such thing,” my grandmother scolds. “This is a family holiday. You know better than to take off to go see some girl.”

“I won’t be gone long. I just need to talk to her.”

“Doesn’t your phone work?” Grandpa mutters.

“Mom took it. She won’t give it back until tonight.” I walk over to him. “Could I use yours?”

He shakes his head. “I’m not getting in the middle of this.”

“Grandma?” I say.

“I agree with your grandfather. It’s best if we stay out of this. Why don’t you sit down and join us?” She pats the open spot on the couch next to her.

“Maybe later.” I take off, going upstairs to my room. I open the door and see Paris lying on my bed, looking at her phone.

“It’s about time you showed up,” she says, glancing at me before looking back at her phone.

I stand by the bed. “You need to leave. And take off my sweatshirt.”

She gets up, facing me. “Is it true? Are you really adopted?”

That’s what she came up here to ask me? I thought she’d want to talk about Nova, not my adoption. But I guess the adoption story is better gossip for her to spread around school than telling people I dumped her for a girl who’s poor and works at a diner.

“Why do you care?” I say.

She smiles. “Why would your parents give you up when you were five? Were you a little brat? I could totally see that. Little Easton throwing tantrums all the time.”

Did she seriously just say that? Does she really think my parents gave me up because I misbehaved? And why is she smiling? This isn’t funny.

“I’m not talking about this. You need to leave.” I walk to the door.

She comes up to me. “You might as well tell me. It’ll be all over school by Monday.”

“Then you can hear about it then. Now get out.”
