“Does your sister know I’m here?”

“Yeah. We told her last night.”

“Is she okay with it?”

“She doesn’t have a choice.”

“So she’s not. She doesn’t want me staying here.”

“It’s not about you. It’s about someone else getting attention besides her. I’ll go get you some clothes. Oh, and if you want a toothbrush, just take one from the drawer. There should be new ones in there, along with toothpaste.”

“It’s like I’m at a hotel,” I kid.

He steps up to me, his arms going around me. “I wish it could be your home. I’m going to ask my mom if you can stay after next week, but I don’t think my dad will agree to it. My mom probably wouldn’t either.”

“It’s okay. I never intended to spend more than a night.”

“I’ll find you a place,” he says, sounding determined. “I’m not going to let you live in that car.”

“My car! Easton, we have to go get it!”

“We can’t. It’s a blizzard outside. The roads are really bad.”

“I can’t just leave it there. They’ll tow it and I’ll never get it back.”

“Nobody’s going to care that it’s at the park. There aren’t signs saying you can’t leave it there.”

“That doesn’t mean they won’t tow it. Or what if someone breaks in and takes my stuff?”

“What stuff? Isn’t it just your clothes?”

“Well, yeah, but it’s all I have.”

“If someone takes your clothes, I’ll get you new ones.”

“Let’s go get the car later today, after the storm ends.”

“You’re not leaving the house. You could barely walk to the bathroom without blacking out. I’m not letting you drive. If you want the car that bad, I’ll see if my mom will go with me to get it.” His gaze lowers to my body, still wrapped in the towel. “Damn, I shouldn’t be thinking that. I’ll be right back.”

“Wait!”

“What?” He turns back.

“What were you thinking?”

He walks back to me, lowering his mouth to my ear. “Just because we’re back to being friends doesn’t mean I don’t want more. Seeing you in a towel has me wanting to do things.” His hand wraps around my bare shoulder as he kisses my cheek. It’s an innocent kiss but has me feeling things I haven’t felt since the last time we were together.

He leaves, and I lay back on the bed, wishing we could go back to how things were before everything fell apart.

Penelope comes into the room, holding a stack of clothes. “I think these should fit. They’ll just be a little baggy.” She sets them down on the end of the bed. “If the weather clears up, I’ll go out and get you some things that fit.”

“You don’t have to. I just need to go back to my car and get my bag.”

“You’re not going out until you’re feeling better.”
