“Did he say anything about your mom?”

“No. We just talked about the game.”

“What’s Jenna up to? Did she find something to do?”

“She has a friend over. Hey, what did you tell Jenna when you were in her room?”

“Not much. Why?”

“I heard her telling her friend stuff about you.”

Nova lifts her head off my shoulder and looks up at me. “What stuff?”

“Her friend asked if we were dating. Jenna said you told her we weren’t, but she thinks you’re lying.” I turn to Nova, putting my arm up behind her on the couch. “So what’s the truth? Are we dating or not?”

She pauses before answering. “No.”

“That’s it? No? You don’t want to add something to that?”

“Like what?”

“Like no, but maybe later, after I’ve forgiven Easton for being an idiot.”

“I’ve already forgiven you. I’m not mad at you.”

“So why the no? That’s pretty definite.”

“I just don’t want either of us getting our hopes up about something that might never happen.”

“Why couldn’t it happen?”

“Because I don’t know where I’m going, or what I’m going to do.”

“So let’s figure it out together.”

“Easton, this isn’t your problem. It’s mine. You’ve got your life all figured out. Mine’s a mess, and I’m not going to drag you into it.”

“Maybe Iwantto be in your life.”

She looks away. “You’re basing that on us being together a few weeks. That’s not long enough for you to say you want to be with me.”

“It’s long enough for me to know that I love you. I never stopped.” I take her hand in mine. “Don’t push me away just because you’re scared.”

“That’s not what I’m doing.”

“Then what’s the reason? Tell me why you’re fighting this.”

She looks back at me. “We’re not the same people we were in the foster home. We ended up going down different paths and mine isn’t going anywhere.”

“What are you talking about? You could do anything.”

She shakes her head and turns away from me.

I put my arms around her and pull her back against my chest. “Tell me what’s going on. Why you’d turn away?”

She pauses a moment. “Did Jenna say anything else? About me? About what we talked about when I was in her room?”

“No. Why?”
