“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I didn’t have time. I was trying to win us the game so I could get home.”

“Why didn’t you go to the game?” Jace asks Nova.

“Because I’m sick,” she says.

“Oh, yeah, that’s right.” He leans back. “Is it contagious?”

“Probably. I’m not sure what I have. Could be anything.”

Jace gets up. “I think I’ll take off.” He gives us a wave. “You two have fun.” He races up the stairs.

I laugh. “You scared him. He thinks he’s gonna get sick now.”

“Good. Now we’re even for how he treated me on Halloween.” She looks back at the TV.

“So why’d you lie?”

“Lie about what?”

“You and me.”

She doesn’t answer.

“Nova?”

“What?”

“Why’d you tell Jace we were back together?”

“Because we are. We’re both here, in the same place.”

“That’s not what he meant. You told him we were dating.”

“I never said we were dating.”

“That’s what you meant when you told him we’re together. Why’d you let him think that? You know he’s gonna go tell my whole school that on Monday.”

She looks up at me. “Why do people at your school care who you’re dating?”

“Well, not to brag but I’m kind of a big deal there.”

“Why?” She looks back at the TV. “Because you’re hot?”

“You think I’m hot?”

“Just answer the question,” she says, sounding annoyed.

“Because I play hockey. And my school has one of the best hockey teams in the state.”

“And that makes you popular?”

“That’s one of the reasons.”

“What’s the other one?”

“I thought that was it, but apparently I’m hot, so I guess that’s the other reason.” I’m just joking, but she’s not laughing. She won’t even look at me.
