“Car wouldn’t start,” I yell back.

He just shakes his head, knowing it’s a lie. It’s the go-to excuse we all use when we’re late.

“Hey.” Kevin gives me a nod as I walk to my locker which is across from his. “You ready for tonight?”

“Yeah. Why wouldn’t I be?” I drop my bag on the bench.

“It’s a tough team and you’ve been out of it all week.”

I turn to him. “What the hell are you talking about?”

“Ever since that girl moved in with you, you haven’t been able to pay attention. You didn’t even hear Coach calling on you yesterday.”

“Because it was loud, not because I wasn’t paying attention.” I lower my voice. “Who told you she’s living with me?”

“Jace. Why? Is it a secret?”

“It’s not true. She’s not living there. She’s only staying with us a few days.”

“Jace said she had a room there.”

“Yeah, the guest room. Why the fuck is Jace saying this shit?”

As I say it, he walks by.

“Jace!” I yell, stopping him.

“What?”

“Get your ass over here!”

He walks back to me at my locker. “You going to the party tonight?”

“Why are you telling people Nova’s living at my house?”

“Because she is.”

“She’sstayingthere for a few days. She’s not living there.”

“Yeah? So what’s the big deal?”

I glance around to make sure we’re alone. “I need you to keep your mouth shut about her. Don’t be telling people she’s living with me.”

“Yeah, whatever. I gotta go get ready.”

He takes off. Kevin’s still staring at me. “What’s going on? Why all the secrets?”

“It’s not a secret. I just don’t like people talking about me. Or Nova.”

“What’s the deal with you two? Jace said you and her are back together, but I can’t believe your parents are okay with that.”

“They don’t get to tell me who I can date.”

“I meant her living there. My parents might let a friend stay at the house, but not my girlfriend. And your parents are even stricter than mine.”

“Nova’s just a friend. Jace assumed we were dating and told the whole school.”

He grins. “Does that mean I could ask her out?”
