Nova steps away from the door and adjusts her shirt. “Do I look okay?”

“Yeah. Why?”

“You messed up my bra.”

“It was in the way,” I say, pulling her back to me. “So does this mean you’re agreeing to date me again?”

“Maybe.”

“Yes or no. Pick one.”

She smiles a little. ”Yes.” She breaks from my arms and goes out the door. “See you downstairs.”

I was going to ask her what changed her mind, but she took off before I could. It’s probably better if I don’t ask. It’ll just make her question it.

When I get downstairs, Nova’s sitting at the kitchen table, eating her pizza. The pizza boxes are spread out along the island. I throw a few slices on a plate and join her.

“There you two are,” my mom says as she comes into the kitchen. “Were you upstairs?”

“Yeah,” Nova says, glancing at me. “Easton was showing me his trophies.”

I smile at her, then shut it down before my mom sees.

“He sure has a lot of them, doesn’t he?” my mom says, taking a dish towel from the drawer.

“He does.” She smiles at me. “It’s impressive.”

“Not really,” I say. “When I was younger, they gave everyone a trophy. I should just throw those away. They’re meaningless.”

“Honey, don’t do that,” my mom says. “They’re still special. They’re memories from your childhood.”

So is Nova and she didn’t want me havingheras a memory. I still don’t get why she’s okay with Nova being in my life now. I’m worried it’s only temporary and she’ll turn on her as soon as my dad gets back. He’ll convince my mom Nova isn’t good for me and they’ll be both trying to get rid of her.

“What time will Dad be home tomorrow?” I ask my mom. “You said he was going to the office first?”

“Yes, so he’ll probably be home around noon.” She walks over to us. “I’ll give you some money to take Nova out for lunch. I’d like to be alone when I talk to your father.”

“Yeah, okay,” I say, thinking that’s probably a good idea. If he sees Nova without getting an explanation, he’s more likely to get angry.

“What about Jenna?” I ask.

“She’s going shopping with her friends. Oh, and take Nova’s car so it’s not in the garage when he gets home.”

“Maybe I should call Rielle and see if I could stay with her tonight,” Nova says to me.

“Who’s Rielle?” my mom asks.

“She’s my friend from school,” Nova explains.

“I thought she was staying with the people who are adopting her kid,” I say.

“She is, but she said she might be able to move back into her apartment this weekend.”

“You said she didn’t have room for you there.”

“She doesn’t have a bed for me, but I could sleep on the floor.”

“You’re not sleeping on someone’s floor,” my mom says, like she’s scolding her for even suggesting that. “You’ll stay here until we find you someplace else. I’ll talk with Stephen and everything will work out.” She says it like she’s trying to convince herself of that. She’s getting worried. I can tell by how much she’s cleaning. When she’s worried, she can’t stop cleaning. She’ll even rewash dishes just so she has something to clean.
