He laughs. “I’m kidding. Two would be plenty, or maybe three if the first two turned out okay.”

I smile. “How would you know if they turned out okay?”

“If they’re kind and respectful and don’t demand that I give them shit. Basically, if they’re not Jenna.”

“She’s not that bad. She just doesn’t know anything different. I’m sure all her friends are spoiled too.”

“I think I might’ve got through to her when I was in the house getting your keys.”

“What do you mean?”

“I told her you could end up on the streets if my dad kicks you out.” He looks me in the eye. “I will not let that happen, but I told her that just so she’d get how serious this is.”

“And what did she say?”

“Nothing. For the first time ever, she had no response. She wasn’t getting it when I kept telling her you had no place to go. But today, she finally got it.”

Easton’s phone rings. “It’s my mom.”

“Answer it,” I say, my heart pounding.

“Hey, Mom, what’s going on?” He listens for what seems like forever. “So what does that mean?” He listens again. “Yeah, okay. We will, but I don’t want to do the family dinner thing. I know you said Dad’s cooled off, but I haven’t. I’m still pissed at him for acting that way to Nova.” He nods. “Yeah, bye.”

“What happened? What’d she say?”

“He’ll let you stay, but only for a few more days.”

“And then what?”

“My mom told him she’d find you a different place by then.”

“What if she can’t?”

“I don’t know. I didn’t ask. We can talk to her when we get home.”

“We’re going there now?”

“If you’re okay with it. If you’re not, we could go do something.”

“Is your dad home?”

“No, he went to his office to catch up on work. He’ll be home tonight for dinner, but I told my mom we wouldn’t be there. I don’t want to be around my dad right now. I’d rather take you out.”

“Out where?”

“On a date. We haven’t been on a date since you moved back.”

“Because we weren’t dating.”

“And now we are, so we’re going out. Where do you want to go?”

I pause to think. “This is gonna sound weird, but could we maybe go to the diner? We don’t have to eat there. I just want to say hi to Kym and Mara and explain why I left.”

“Yeah, we can go there. We could go there right now if you want.”

“Let’s go later. I want to go talk to your mom while your dad’s not there.”

We go back to the house but can’t find his mom.
