“Let’s find out. Let go of me.”

“No! Are you crazy? I’ll fall down and won’t be able to get up.”

Easton took me to the ice rink that’s a few miles from his house. It’s super fancy compared to the one where I used to work. Everything’s brand new. It even smells new. The skates I rented look like they haven’t ever been worn.

“You gotta relax,” Easton says. “It’s easier if you’re not so tense.”

“I’m tense because I can’t skate,” I say, laughing as I almost fall.

“But you’re having fun, right? Just a little?”

I smile at him. “I always have fun with you. Except maybe when you’re trying to kill me.”

He laughs. “I’m not trying to kill you. You’re not going to die if you fall on the ice. Hey, let’s do that thing I did with the little girl. Remember when you were working the snack stand and that girl fell down and I helped her up and took her around the rink?”

“Yeah, but she knew how to skate. I don’t. I can’t do that.”

“She was eight, and she didn’t know how to skate. She was still learning.”

“What if I fall?”

“Then you’ll get back up. Since when you are afraid to do shit?”

“I’m not afraid.”

“Then prove it.”

I sigh. “Go ahead.”

He keeps hold of my hand and gets in front of me. He takes my other hand. “You’re still standing.”

“Barely.”

“Ready?”

“No, but go ahead.”

He skates backward, taking me with him. I’m afraid to move my feet so I leave them where they’re at and just let him pull me across the ice. Itiskind of fun. He gets to the end of the rink and turns around, taking me with him. I almost fall but manage to stay up and steady myself.

“Good job,” Easton says. “See? You’re skating.”

He moves smoothly over the ice, not even looking where he’s going. It’s like he’s memorized the rink and just glides over it without any effort at all.

“I changed my mind,” I say. “This was a good idea. I like skating with you.”

“Ready to go faster?” he asks with a devious grin.

“No!”

He laughs. “Okay, we’ll stay at the old lady speed.”

I roll my eyes. I want to go faster, but not today. Maybe next time, because I definitely want to do this again.

After the skating rink, we go to the diner. Even though I wanted to come here, I feel kind of sick when we pull into the parking lot.

“What are you waiting for?” Easton asks, holding my door open. “Aren’t we going in?”

“Yeah. It just feels weird to be back.”
