“Tell me what happened and I’ll leave.”

“I already told you.”

“I don’t believe you.”

“Jake, I don’t have time for this. I have people waiting for their orders.”

I step up to her. “Did Troy do that to you?”

She looks away. “Jake, I—”

“Did he or not?”

She sighs. “He found your texts in my phone. He doesn’t know it’s you. I have you listed as S for Sanders. For all Troy knows, it could be any guy. He accused me of cheating on him and got angry.”

“And did that to your back?” I say, my heart racing, my body heating up. “He gave you those bruises?”

“He didn’t mean to. You know how Troy gets when he’s angry.”

“Yeah, I fucking grew up with an asshole like him. I watched my dad beat up my mom and blame her for it. He’d say it was her fault for making him angry. Sounds just like Troy.” My hands form fists as rage fills my veins. “He’s not getting away with this.”

“Jake, please don’t do anything.”

“Too late.” I storm out of there and go up to the old guy. I didn’t even get his name. “I have to go. Tara has my number. You can get it from her.”

I take off before the guy asks me where I’m going. I get in my car and head to Troy’s place. I’m going to kill him. I know I can’t actually do that, but I want to. How could he do that to Tara? And is it only her, or has he done this to other girls?

On the way to Troy’s house, I realize he might not be home. He’s usually watching football with Sean and Leo on Saturdays.

I call Sean.

“Hey, you at the game?” he answers, knowing I’d planned to go to the football game today.

“I didn’t go. Hey, is Troy with you?”

“No, he’s at the garage. Something’s wrong with his car so he’s there trying to fix it. Why are you looking for Troy?”

“I’ll tell you later. I gotta go.” I turn left at the next street and head toward the garage where Troy works. I hope it’s just him and his uncle isn’t there. This fight is between Troy and me. I don’t want anyone getting in my way when I beat his face in.

JAKE

“Troy!”I yell as I go into the garage. The front door was locked but the back was open so I let myself in. “You in here?”

Troy appears from behind the raised hood of his car. “Sanders. What are you doing here? Did Sean send you over? I owe him some beer and he won’t shut the fuck up about it.”

“Sean didn’t send me.” I walk over to Troy. “I came on my own.”

“Why? You got car trouble? Because we ain’t open today. I’m just here working on my engine.”

“How are things going with Tara?” My hands clench as I think about the bruises covering her back, the ones caused by Troy.

“Tara?” He snorts. “Why the fuck you asking about Tara?”

“I just saw her. At the diner.”

“Yeah? So?” He disappears under the hood of the car.
