“He’s in stable condition. It doesn’t appear that any organs were damaged, but he lost a lot of blood. We’ll be—”

“Hold on.” I look for Danny and see him getting into his truck. “Danny!”

“Yeah?”

“Get over here! Jake’s in the hospital!”

Danny jumps out of his truck and races over to me. “What happened?”

“I don’t know. I’m talking to the nurse.” I put the phone on speaker. “How did this happen? How’d he get hurt?”

“His friends found him with a stab wound. I don’t know all the details. You’ll need to talk to the police.”

Jake was stabbed? I immediately think of our old neighborhood, where getting stabbed wasn’t that unusual. When I lived there, most guys I knew carried a knife. It was just normal, like carrying a phone with you. If you got in a fight, you knew there was a chance you’d end up with a knife in you. I got in a lot of fights, but never got stabbed because I’d take the guy down before he could get his knife out. I’m not sure Jake would be able to do that. I taught him how to fight, but that was years ago, when he was younger and didn’t pay attention when I was trying to teach him stuff. And living here the past few years, he’s not used to people carrying around knives. Whoever did this probably took Jake by surprise.

I look at Danny as I talk to the nurse. “Where did it happen? Do you know?”

“He was found in a mechanic’s garage. I don’t know the name of it or the location. That’s something you’ll need to ask the police.”

“Troy,” I say to Danny. He nods, knowing I’m right.

“As I was saying, your brother lost a lot of blood,” the nurse says. “The doctor stitched him up and we’re treating him for a possible infection.”

“Has he said anything?” I ask. “About who did this to him?”

“He hasn’t regained consciousness yet. When he does, I’m sure the police will question him about that.”

“How long will he be in the hospital?”

“We’ll be keeping him here for at least the next few days to make sure there’s no additional bleeding or fluid buildup. And of course we’ll want to make sure there aren’t any signs of infection before he goes home.”

“Okay, well, if he wakes up, tell him I’m on my way.”

“I will. And don’t worry. We’ll take good care of him.”

“Thanks.” I end the call and say to Danny, “Don’t worry? Is she serious? Jake’s been stabbed! And he hasn’t woken up!”

“Hey, she’s just doing her job,” Danny says.

“Yeah, I know,” I say with a sigh. “I’m just so fucking pissed. It had to be Troy who did this. His uncle owns that garage. Jake said Troy had been working there.”

“But why would he stab Jake?”

“Because he found out Jake was fooling around with his girlfriend.” I slam my hand on the hood of my car. “Fuck! I knew something like this would happen. I told Jake to stay away from that girl, but he wouldn’t listen. And now he’s in the hospital because of it. I’m gonna kill Troy. I’m going to squeeze his fucking neck with my bare hands and enjoy every second of it.”

“Dean.” Danny grips my shoulder. “You’re not going back to that. You’ve come too far to be that guy again.”

I yank away from him. “If there’s any time to let my rage come out, it’s now. When some fucker tries to kill my brother.”

“Jake’s going to be okay. And Troy will get charged for this and probably go to prison.”

“Prison’s too good for that bastard. I want him to suffer.”

“He’s not your dad.”

“What?” I stare at Danny. “What the fuck are you talking about?”

“Troy. He’s not your dad.”
