“Where does he think you are?”

“With a girl. I told him I have a date. Fuck, it’s cold out here. I need to go inside.”

“You can, but it smells like shit. I mean, actual shit. This place hasn’t been open for ten years and it still smells like shit.”

“I’ll deal with it. It’s better than freezing to death.”

Their voices fade as they go into the bathroom. I told Sean to stand by the door, blocking it so Troy couldn’t try to make a run for it. I’m a little surprised Sean’s doing this. There’s an unwritten code that you never betray a friend from the neighborhood. Even if he’s done something illegal, you don’t rat him out. You protect your own. It says a lot that Sean’s doing this. He’s choosing to do what’s right over following the code. Troy’s cousins could come after Sean for this, or his uncle might, but Sean was still willing to do it. It shows that he’s a good friend to Jake. I regret all the shit I said about him when Jake kept telling me he was hanging out with Sean. Leo’s a good friend too. He’s been at the hospital every day to see Jake.

It’s time to do this. I get out of the car and walk behind the building to the bathroom. The door is shut, but I can hear Sean talking. He’s saying something about a football game. That’sgood. Talking about normal stuff like football will make Troy think Sean’s just here to see his friend.

I take a deep breath, my mind going to Jake, knowing he almost died because of the guy on the other side of this door. I feel my anger building, but I don’t try to stop it. I want to feel it. This is the one time I wouldn’t care if I lost control.

Troy laughs and my rage spikes to a new level. Jake told me Troy laughed after stabbing him. The fucker laughed, like a psychopath.

With my rage fueling me, I kick in the door and burst into the bathroom, knocking Sean out of the way.

“What the fuck?” Troy says as I lunge at him. He was eating a bag of chips, but they fly out of his hand and scatter in the air as I slam his body against the concrete wall, pinning his arms and legs in place.

“How’s it feel?” I say, spit spraying out of my mouth all over his disgusting face. “You like the pain? Because I’d fucking love to give you more.”

“Sean!” Troy tries to look past me, panic in his eyes. “What the fuck’s going on?”

“Did you call the cops?” I say to Sean.

“No,” he says.

“What the fuck are you waiting for?”

Troy smirks. “You think he’d call the cops on me? He wouldn’t do that.”

“Sean! Call the fucking cops!”

I want to look back at Sean, but don’t want to take my eyes off Troy. He’s trying to fight against me, but I barely feel it. It’s not taking much effort to hold him in place. My body weight’s doing most of it.

“You might as well let me go,” Troy says. “He’s not calling the cops.”

“Then I guess I’ll have to kill you.”

“Yeah, right. You’re not that guy anymore. You don’t have it in you.”

“Believe me, it’s still in me. I can feel it coursing through me right now. The urge to snap your fucking neck. Watch your body fall to the ground.” I smile at him. “You think I won’t do it? Watch me.”

Troy’s trying to hide his fear, but the panic in his eyes is telling me he knows I’m not messing around. “Sean! Get him off me!”

“Call the fucking cops!” I yell at Sean.

“I told you, he’s not going to do it,” Troy says. “You don’t turn on your friends.”

“You’re not my friend,” Sean says.

I hear sirens in the distance.

“What the fuck is that?” Troy says.

“The cops are on their way,” Sean says. “I already called them.”

“When?” I say to Sean, my eyes still on Troy.
