“Here,” Brook says in the background. “Snack on this until dinner.”

“What’d she give you?” I ask.

“Cheese and crackers,” he says. “Babe, this is not going to hold me until dinner.”

“You should be here,” I tell him. “There’s a whole table of snacks, more than we can eat.”

“Brook, next year we’re going to Danny’s house for Thanksgiving.”

I can imagine the dirty look she’s giving him right now.

He laughs. “I’m just kidding, although it’s not a bad idea.”

“Maybe you’ll be living here next year. ”

In a few weeks, Dean has an interview for an assistant coaching job at a small college about a half hour outside of Chicago. I’m really hoping he gets the job. Last summer, I couldn’t wait to move away and finally have some freedom, butI have to admit, I miss my brother. I miss Brook too. I wish they lived closer.

“It’s possible, although Brook isn’t sure about going back to the cold.”

“Dallas gets cold.”

“Yeah, but not like Chicago. The winters there can be brutal.”

“You get used to it.”

“You almost sound like you want me there, but that can’t be right,” he kids. “I remember you saying you couldn’t wait to get away from me and be out on your own.”

“I don’t want to live with you, but I wouldn’t mind having you closer.”

“Hey, Brook. Jake wants us to move there.”

“My mom would love that,” I hear Brook say.

“I guess I wouldn’t mind going back there,” Dean says. “Danny’s thinking of moving back.”

“Yeah, he told me.” I see him coming down the stairs. “Hey, Danny. I’ve got Dean thinking about moving back.”

“He’ll never do it. He’s too afraid of the cold.”

“Did you hear that?” I say to Dean.

“Yeah, he’s just saying that so I’ll prove him wrong. Tell him that reverse psychology bullshit doesn’t work on me.”

“Yeah, okay,” I say with a laugh.

“Hey, I gotta go. Brook needs help with the turkey.” He laughs. “The thing weighs a ton. I got the biggest one I could find.”

“Okay, well, Happy Thanksgiving. I miss you guys.”

“We miss you too. Bye, Jake.” He ends the call.

Tara comes into the room and over to me. “I just talked to my aunt.”

“Yeah? How’s her Thanksgiving?”

“Good. She’s having dinner on the beach.”

“Like actually on the beach?”
