“I’d love that.” She kisses me.

“Hey, break it up,” Danny says as he walks past us. “There’s kids here.”

“Sorry,” Tara says, getting off my lap.

“He’s joking,” I tell her.

Danny laughs and continues to the kitchen.

“Hey, did Martin tell you about Troy?” Tara asks.

“No,” I say, feeling sick just hearing Troy’s name.

“Some guy Martin used to work with at the courthouse said Troy got charged with stealing car parts. His uncle was charged too and his garage was closed down. Anyway, with the additional charges, Martin thinks Troy will end up going to prison, either for what he did to you, the stolen car parts, or both.”

“Good. I hope that actually happens.” I pull her back down on my lap. “I don’t want to talk about Troy. It’s Thanksgiving. We’re supposed to be celebrating.”

“And being grateful. And this year, I’m most grateful for you.” She kisses me.

“Dinner!” Danny yells as he comes into the room. “Not this again. What did I just tell you guys?”

Tara laughs. “Sorry.”

He rolls his eyes. “Dad’s carving the turkey. Mom wants everyone in the dining room. Oh, and Tara, I think you left your phone in the kitchen.”

“I’ll go get it.” She races off.

“You coming?” Danny says to me.

“I’ll be there in a minute.”

As he leaves, I get my phone out. When Tara talked about being grateful, it made me think of Dean and how much he’s done for me. How much he sacrificed to make sure I finished high school and got into college. I’m grateful for all he’s done for me and yet I never tell him. I just assume he knows.

I send him a text. Thanks for being a great brother. I never tell you that but I thought you should know.

I know,he texts back, which makes me smile. We’ll see if you still think that when we move back there.

You’re moving back?

If I get that job. I talked to Brook and we decided we like the idea of moving back to Chicago. You think you could handle us being there with you?

It’d be rough but I think I’d survive,I text back, but the truth is, I’d love it if he moved back.

A few years ago, Dean and I couldn’t wait to get out of here. We thought moving away meant leaving behind the shitty life we had before. But it didn’t leave us. The memories are still there. This city…this neighborhood…is part of us. It always will be. Moving away didn’t change that. And being here again, I realized how much it feels like home. A lot of bad things happened here, but a lot of good things did too. Like Dean meeting Brook. And me falling in love with Tara.

I never thought I’d see that little girl with the overalls ever again, but then she showed up, all these years later. I’m taking that as a sign that more good things are coming. I’ve had enough bad stuff happen in my life. It’s time for something good.
