"What'd you do?" Evan asks as we go in the classroom. Over half the seats are open. Apparently there isn't much demand for AP Physics. At my old school, people were on a waiting list to take it.

"I took his desk," I say, taking a seat in the second row.

Evan sits beside me. "What does that mean?"

"He wouldn't let me get to the desk next to him. The only one left. So I sat on his desk."

"Shit." Evan blows out a breath, shaking his head. "Bad move."

"Why? What's the big deal?"

"Everyone take out the class schedule," the teacher says. "I need a minute to reboot my computer."

"You might want to change schools," Evan says, taking out his laptop.

"Yeah, right," I say, leaning down to open my backpack.

"I'm serious." He leans over to me, lowering his voice. "Dean isn't normal. There's something seriously wrong with that guy."

"Wrong how? What do you mean?"

"He barely talks to anyone and he's got some serious anger issues."

"Are you saying he's hurt people?"

"Not in school, at least not that I know of, but on the football field he's a freaking monster."

"Isn't that how they're supposed to be? All mean and scary to intimidate the other team?"

"Dean does more than intimidate them. He sends them to the hospital."

"Not on purpose, right? I mean, it's football. It's a dangerous sport."

"Maybe, but I swear the guy gets off on it."

"On hurting people?"

"Other football players, yeah. Maybe he's that way with other people too. I wouldn't know because I stay away from him. You should too. The guy's psycho."

"I have to sit next to him in class."

"Don't talk to him. Don't even look at him. Just leave him alone."

"Okay, everyone," the teacher says. "I seem to have resolved my technical issues." He smiles at us. "Welcome to AP Physics."

I'm dreading this class but I need it for college, assuming I'm still going. My dad promised to pay for it but that was before he left, back when I believed his promises. Now I might be paying for it myself. My mom can't afford it. She can barely pay our expenses, even after moving to a cheap apartment and trading in her expensive car.

"The test will cover what I just went over," the teacher says, "as well as the material in chapters one and two."

Wait—what did he just say? I missed it. I wasn't listening. I need to pay attention. I need an A in this class, along with all my others, to even have a chance at getting a scholarship.

After class, I race back to my locker to get the portable charger for my phone. I stop before I get there, my pulse ticking up when I see him, his massive body blocking where I need to go.

"You've gotta be kidding me," I say to myself as I slowly approach him. Out of all the lockers in school, his just happens to be right next to mine? Why does he even need a locker? He didn't bring his book to class, or a laptop. He didn't even have a notebook.

"Excuse me," I say, my arm touching his as I reach for my locker.

He slowly turns to me. "What the fuck do you want now?"
