“No. Why would he care?”

“Guys like him are possessive. They don’t want anyone even looking at their girl.”

“He knows I’m not interested in her. I told him about Haley and how I can’t even think about being with someone else right now.”

“So you gave Tara a ride when you were leaving Sean’s place?”

“No, I drove her home, then went back to Sean’s.”

“I don’t get it. Why would you drive all that way to take her home?”

“Because I didn’t want her being late to work. They changed the bus schedule and if she’d waited for the next one, she would’ve been late. Troy’s car isn’t working and Tara doesn’t have one so…why are we talking about this? Why does it matter?”

“I just find it strange that you left your friends to take Troy’s girlfriend home.”

“She’s a friend. I knew her when we were kids.”

“You haven’t seen her for like ten years. That’s not really a friend.”

“What are you trying to say?”

“That I don’t think it’s a good idea for you to hang out with this girl. How many guys do you know who are only friends with a girl?”

“A lot.”

“Let me rephrase that. How many girls have you been friends with? As in only friends. Not wanting anything more.”

“I was friends with Haley.”

“Because you wanted to date her. And you did.”

“I’m friends with Brook and her sister.”

“They don’t count. They’re like family. Theywillbe family next summer.”

“Fine, but just because I haven’t been friends with a girl before doesn’t mean it can’t happen.”

“It’s not a good idea, especially when she’s dating someone like Troy.”

“Didn’t you just say you were going to let me grow up and stop treating me like a kid?”

“I’m still allowed to say my opinion.”

“And I’m allowed to do what I want.” I check the time. “I have to go. I told her I’d be there at noon. Oh, congrats on the win yesterday.”

“Thanks. We missed having you there.”

“Tell Brook I said hi.”

“I will. She was hoping to talk to you, but she’s out having brunch with Chelsea.”

“Why didn’t you go with them?”

“It’s a girl thing. No guys allowed. I’m guessing they’re talking about Danny.”

Danny and Brook’s sister, Chelsea, dated for a couple years, then broke up when Chelsea decided to take a job in New York.Danny was crushed, because the move basically meant she was breaking up with him. She ended up not taking the job, but they didn’t date after that. Danny didn’t trust that she’d stick around. Chelsea’s a few years older than Danny. I think that’s always bothered her and why she can’t commit to him.

“Are they getting back together?” I ask.
