“I’m just showing her around the campus.”

“Are you his sister?” Maddy asks Tara.

“No, we’re just friends. We went to grade school together.”

Maddy looks back at me, smiling. “So tomorrow after class, you want to grab coffee somewhere?”

“Um, maybe. I don’t drink coffee so—”

“They have other stuff. You can let me know tomorrow. See ya!” She walks past me, her arm brushing against mine.

Tara looks back at her as she continues across campus. “Are you going to go out with her? Because she definitely wants you to.”

“I don’t know. She doesn’t seem like my type.”

“Why not?”

“Well, for one, she’s rich. I saw her getting into a Mercedes.”

“You don’t want to date someone with money?”

“I’m not saying I wouldn’t, but I don’t think it would last. I don’t think we’d have anything in common.”

“What about your ex? Was she more like us?”

“No. Her parents had a huge house and two really nice cars.”

“So she was rich.”

“I guess she kind of was, but it didn’t seem like it. She wasn’t walking around wearing designer clothes and her car wasn’t anything great.”

“Yeah, but she grew up having money. That’s a lot different than how you and I grew up.”

“I guess I never thought about it because everyone I knew there was like her. And Dean’s girlfriend grew up rich and those two get along, so I just assumed Haley and I would too.”

“Then why wouldn’t you give Maddy a chance? You could at least have coffee with her.”

“Yeah, I guess.”

But I’m not excited about it, partly because I still have feelings for Haley. The other reason is because I’m having feelings for someone else. Tara. Troy’s girlfriend. The girl who’s only supposed to be a friend.

JAKE

“This is my roommate, Rob,”I say, as Tara and I go into my dorm room.

“Hey,” Rob says, glancing up at her. He’s sitting on his bed, looking at his phone.

“Hey, I’m Tara,” she says.

Rob gives me a slight smile, like he thinks Tara and I hooked up, or are planning to.

“It’s nice,” Tara says, looking around the room. “It’s bigger than I thought it’d be.”

“I’ll leave you guys alone,” Rob says, getting up.

“You don’t have to,” I say. “We’re not—”
