His brows rise. “This has been going on for a month?”

“Not quite, but close to that.”

“Then why the hell is she still with Troy? Why hasn’t she broken up with him?”

“She says she wants to wait for the right time.”

“When’s the right time?”

“I don’t know. I keep asking her that, but she won’t give me an answer, and then she changes the subject.”

“Then there’s your answer. She’s not breaking up with him.”

“She is. She just hasn’t done it yet.”

“If she wanted to be with you instead of Troy, she wouldn’t wait to break up with him. She’d just do it.” Sean puts his hand on my shoulder. “I hate to tell you this, but she’s using you. She knew Troy was going away for work so she hooked up with you so she’d have someone while he’s gone.”

“That’s not what happened. She doesn’t want to be with Troy. Even before he left, she was blowing him off. Making excuses not to see him.”

“So that he’d give her attention. Whenever he ignores her, she does the same thing to him so that he wants her again.”

“You’re wrong. I know her better than you, and that’s not what she’s doing. Just wait. When she finds out he’s back in town, she’ll go see him and end it. I bet she does it tomorrow.”

“I bet she doesn’t do it at all. And I bet she tells you whatever you guys had together is over.”

“You’re saying she’d rather be with a guy who treats her like shit than a guy who treats her well?”

“Yeah, because that’s what girls like her do. She thinks a guy like you is too good for her and that once you figure that out, you’ll dump her. So she picks the safe route and goes for a guy like Troy. She knows how he treats girls, so when he breaks up with her, she won’t take it personally. It won’t be about her, but just Troy being Troy. But if someone like you breaks up with her, she’ll feel like she’s not smart enough or good enough. And who the hell wants to feel that way?”

“You’re not even making sense.” I walk past him. “I’ll see you later.”

As I’m driving back to campus, I think about what Sean said about Tara. She does make comments about not being good enough for me. I tell her it’s not true, but even if she still thinks that, it doesn’t mean she’d want to be with Troy. She agrees he’s a horrible boyfriend, which is why she’s breaking up with him this week. She has to. There’s no reason for her to keep going out with him.

My phone rings as I’m walking to my dorm. It’s Dean calling.

“Hey, congrats on the win yesterday,” I say, answering the call.

“Thanks. It was a tough game. I’m a little surprised we won. Hey, I’m calling because I have a question for you.”

“Yeah? What is it?”

“Why is your ex-girlfriend calling me?”

“Haley called you? When?”

“Just now. She asked how you’re doing. What you’re up to. It was obvious she was trying to get information from me. I didn’t know what to tell her so I just said you’re doing well and that I had to go.”

“She called me this morning.” I stop outside my dorm and sit down on the bench. “She wants to get back together.”

“That doesn’t surprise me. So what’d you tell her?”

“That it’s not what I want. Wait—you’re not surprised she wants to get back together with me?”

“No. I figured she would. I just didn’t know when.”

“I didn’t think I’d ever hear from her again.”

“You spoiled her, Jake. Of course she’s gonna want you back.”
