“Who? Are you saying I know him?”

“Troy.”

“Troy from the neighborhood?”

“Yeah. Jake’s dating his girlfriend.”

“What the hell’s he doing that for?”

“I know, right? Out of all the girls in Chicago, he has to date Troy’s girlfriend?”

“Are they really dating or just fooling around?”

“Does it matter? He shouldn’t be doing either. He claims Troy isn’t serious about her, but you know what guys like him are like. They see girls as possessions. Toys to play with when they’re bored.”

“And they get pissed when someone tries to take their toy.”

“Exactly. Even if this girl means nothing to Troy, he still thinks she’s his and nobody else can have her.”

“Who’s the girl? Do I know her?”

“Tara. She went to grade school with Jake. You probably remember seeing her. She was really tiny and always wore overalls.”

“I remember that girl. She moved, right? Before middle school?”

“Yeah, her mom took off and left her. She had to move in with her aunt.”

“So Jake saw her with Troy and made a move on her? Or how did this happen?”

“I don’t know all the details. Jake won’t talk about it with me because he knows I don’t approve. But I think it started about a month ago when he gave her a ride home. He kept seeing her and it led to whatever they are now. Friends with benefits. Who the hell knows?”

“And Troy hasn’t found out? How’s that possible?”

“She lives up by Jake. Close to his college. Troy never goes to that part of town so he hasn’t seen them together. She told Jake she’s ending it with Troy this week, but I don’t believe her. I’m worried she’s going to break Jake’s heart. And if Troy finds out about this, Jake’s going to have a lot more than a broken heart.”

“Jake could beat Troy in a fight. He really bulked up last year. I’m sure Troy is still skinny and out of shape.”

“But I’m guessing he has a gun.”

“Yeah, you’re right. I wasn’t thinking about that.”

“You see why I’m in a bad mood? My stupid brother got himself into trouble and there’s nothing I can do about it.”

“He’s not in trouble yet, is he? Or did something happen?”

“Nothing’s happened, but I have a feeling something will. I told Jake to stay away from Tara until she breaks up with Troy, but I’m sure he won’t listen to me.”

“She’s supposed to break up with him this week? Today’s Wednesday. Maybe it’s already happened.”

“I doubt it. If it had happened, Jake would’ve called and told me so he could gloat about being right.” I shake my head. “I have a really bad feeling about this.”

“Sounds like there’s nothing you can do. Maybe just try not to let it get to you.”

“Easier said than done.”

“I know, but you’ve come a long way. I’d hate to see you go back to how you were because of this thing with Jake.”

“I won’t. I’ll never be like that again.”
