Ella gasped, ripping herself from his embrace to turn around. She peered through the door and then waved her arm through the opening. “Over here! We’re in the barn!”

The driver looked toward the sound of her voice. His eyes rounded when he noticed her arm and he hurried forward. “Ma’am? Ms. Thompson? Is that you?”

“Yes! Yes, it is! We’re stuck. The door won’t open, and we don’t have a phone to call anyone.”

He leaned to the side, looking past her.

Ella could feel Lucas’s presence behind her, the exhilaration from their kiss lingering. She couldn’t bring herself to look at him, though. To do so would only exacerbate the situation. “Can you call my father? I’ll give you the number.”

The delivery driver gave her a funny look. “Don’t you just want help pushing it open?”

“We tried that.” Lucas’s injured hand went through the door opening above Ella’s head.

The man grimaced. “Oh. Well, how about the fire department? I’m sure they could—”

“My father is just fine.”

“Yeah,” Lucas interjected. “He’s the mayor. He’ll probably have a whole SWAT team come out here.”

She dug an elbow backward, snickering when she heard Lucas grunt from the contact. “But in all seriousness, he’ll know someone to call. If you’d like, I can call him myself.” She held out her hand, and when the cool, smooth surface of a cell phone landed on her palm, she nearly cried out in relief.

They were going to be rescued.

She retreated a step into the barn and dialed her father. Lucas’s arm slipped around her waist, pulling her into him. His nose nuzzled her ear and all the hairs on her neck stood on end. She nearly choked on her words when her father answered the phone.

“Hello?” he said.

“Dad?”

“Ella? I thought I told you to take it easy on the weekends. You’re not getting reimbursed for that work.”

“I’m not working, Dad. We got locked in.”

“We? Locked in?”

Lucas kissed the spot on her neck behind her ear and she made a strangled gasping sound. She darted away from him, her eyes flashing with warning. “Lucas and me. The barn door got stuck and we couldn’t get out. Can you please send someone? We might need to completely remove it.”

“Of course, honey. I’ll make some calls right away.”

“Thanks, Dad,” she said and sighed. “You’re a lifesaver.”

“And Ella?”

“Yeah, Dad?” She glanced at Lucas.

“When I get there, we’re not going to have to hide a body, are we?”

She laughed. “What are you talking about?”

“Lucas is still in one piece?”

Ella’s grin widened further. “Yes, he’s in one piece.”

Lucas lifted his brow and pointed to his chest.

“Though he did slice open his hand trying to move the door.”

“He sliced his hand?” The disbelief poured through the phone.
