"Is that a normal thing?"

"Do you have siblings?"

"Yeah?" She replied.

"You tell them all of your business?" He asked, and she shook her head.

"No, but this isn't all of your business. This is something that is important to you. I mean, you know how much you won today?" She asked. He laughed.

"This…" Austin said, gesturing. All of this doesn’t mean anything to me. Not in itself. Sure, the money is nice, but that is about it," he said.

"You are strange," she said. He nodded.

"I have heard that many times,"

"I noticed you're not wearing that ugly hat,"

"It has served its purpose," he replied. He looked up at her to see that she was smiling.

"What's funny?" He asked her, and she shook her head.

"It's just that you are very slippery. I try to pinpoint you, yet you keep moving, and it is like I can't grasp you at all," she said.

"Then why do you keep trying?" He asked.

"Because I want to know you better," She said. Austin went perfectly still then he smiled.

"I'll be honest and tell you that's one of the nicest things I've ever been told by anyone," he said. He held her eyes for awhile, feeling something rise in him but he stifled it and looked away.

"So, what are you going to do after this? Where are you going to go?" She asked.

"I'll start my own ranch," he said quietly.

"Is that something you've always wanted to do?" She asked. Austin thought about that and then shook his head.

"No, really. It's the only thing that I can do. I have wanted to go to school and study mechanical engineering or something like that. I wanted to learn the best, most effective way of tinkering with machines, building them, manipulating them," he said.

"Then why haven't you?" She asked.

"My father couldn't afford college and by the time I left…I don't know…started thinking of things that mattered in life and stuff like that,"

"You started thinking that it would be impossible?" She asked. He looked her directly in the eyes then he nodded.

"Yeah, so it would seem," He said.

"You know you could still do it, right? You could still go back to school. I mean, you can afford it now," she said.

"I'm…"

"If you say you're too old then I will knock your hat off your head," she said.

"Thought lawyers aren't supposed to be violent," He said.

"You're not wriggling out of this one. Why don't you want to go to school?" She asked, and he stared hard at her, his fingers tapping the table.

"You have the loveliest eyes," He said, low and quiet and he saw the blush come up her face.

"Thank you but…"
