“May I talk to you?” he asked.

“Since when have you ever needed my permission to do what you will?” She asked him and he laughed.

“Please come with me to the House,” he said. Nicole smiled a little then stepped out of her car and followed him. They walked until they got to the door and Austin stopped. He turned to look at her.

“Nicole,” he said quietly.

“Austin?” she called, mildly concerned by the hard look on his face. He looked back at her, and his face softened.

“Nicole in the last few weeks of us working together, I have enjoyed your company and have started having a uh…fond affection for you,” he said.

“A fond affection,” Nicole said, trying to keep the laughter from showing but she knew Austin saw it anyway and he took off his hate then shook his head in mild frustration.

“The thing is that I do not think that I am a smooth man. I am not a smooth man, and the words don’t come easily to me, but the truth is that you are a woman that I cherish very much and I would like…I would like to take things seriously with you. Do you see?” he asked.

Nicole looked into his sharp eyes and saw the sincerity in them, and she nodded once.

“You made your peace with Hayden?” she asked, and he nodded.

“Yes, I did,” he said. She tiptoed and held him by the shirt then tugged gently at him, he then leaned in, taking her lips in a full kiss.

“You have kissed before?” she asked. He rolled his eyes, causing her to laugh.

“You’re a beautiful man, Austin,” she said, and he kissed her again.

“I know,” he replied. The world was silent, and it was as though it was watching them.

Austin was seated on the sofa, and he watched her as she slept. She was the most beautiful thing on earth and the more he watched her, the more fond of her he became. She opened her eyes, and he took out his phone to make it seem that he had been doing something else at the time and had not been watching her asleep. She watched him for a time after the sleep had cleared from her eyes, she smiled, shaking her head.

“Have you been sitting here all morning?” She asked him and he placed the phone on his lap then nodded with a sheepish smile.

“Yes actually, I have. I didn't want it to seem weird, so I took up this phone and stared at it, you see? Did you sleep well?” He asked and she nodded.

“Yes, I did. Did you sit there and watch me all night?” She asked him and he shook his head.

“I didn't, actually. I came in here about an hour ago. You don't keep your doors locked?”

“What is the point? I am the only one in this place,” she said, and he nodded.

“I see.”

“Why do you wake so early?” She asked him.

“I was raised on a ranch. Most times I was awake before the sun rose. That was our way,” he said. She nodded and he could see her try to picture it in her mind then he laughed.

His phone started to ring, and he looked at it then raised an eyebrow.

“Who is it?” She asked him.

“It's…it's my brother,” Austin said quietly.

“You don't say that like it's a good thing,” she said to him, and he nodded a little.

“That's because, knowing Ken, it may not be,” he said and looked at Nicole who shook her head.

After taking the call from Kenneth, he hung up and said, “He wants to meet up with us!” “Well why not? You should.” said Nicole.
