He sighs. “It’s not cooperating. I was on the phone all night and I desperately need coffee.”

“Doesn’t one of the assistants usually get you coffee?” I look around, suddenly very aware that there’s no one here but us. Where is everyone?

Usually we would’ve been harassed by someone by now.

“Oh, that was left for you.” He gestures to the phone on the counter.

“My phone!” I snatch it up and resist the urge to hug it.

I pause. I’m not meant to get it until filming ends.

Aaron continues to fight with the coffee machine, and I walk over and snatch the part he’s trying to incorrectly insert off of him. “Something’s wrong.”

“With the coffee machine, I know.” He types away on his phone.

“No, I mean, usually an assistant or a producer or Macey and Alex would have come and gotten us by now.”

He shrugs. “I guess. Just a late start?”

“How do you like it?” I gesture to the coffee.

“Black.” He continues typing away.

“Like your soul.” I look up, slightly mortified I said that out loud.

“What?” He barely acknowledges me.

“Sorry, knee-jerk reaction. Something my friend and I say.”

“Huh.”

After I make our coffees, I decide to call Macey, who said she would make sure her name was in there before I got it back.

I find her name and call. “Hey, girl. Where are you?”

“I’m so sorry, they wouldn’t let me tell you or call you.” She speaks so quickly it’s hard to make out the words.

“Whoa, pause and rewind. What’s going on?”

Macey sounds frantic. “After you left, Aaron walked off and they literally packed everything up, and made us pack up all our things, and put us all on planes home.”

“What?! Don’t mess with me right now.” I feel my stomach drop. It’s over? I feel a twinge of disappointment.

I should be feeling relieved, shouldn’t I? My mind races.

I can hear traffic noise in the background. “Wait, where are you?”

“I’m in New York.”

I feel a wave of nausea. “What?”

This can’t be happening. They haven’t paid me. I don’t have enough money to get home. Why would they send all the crew home and forget about me? They can’t do that can they? How is that legal?

“I’m so sorry,” Macey says. “It happened so quickly.”

Everything starts moving in slow motion. I can feel my body shaking. I am literally stuck in The Bahamas, which would be fine if they had paid me.

All of this was for nothing. I can’t even fathom how they are allowed to do this, but I have a feeling my contract covers them in a situation like this and not me.
