“This isyourfault! Why didn’t you make sure Eric knew he had to get the Acker file to me?”

My phone rings, and he continues to yell. “How do you not keep track of these things? A monkey could do your tasks. Maybe I’ll hire a monkey. It would be easier on the eyes and I wouldn’t want to throw myself off a building every time I had to remind it to do something.”

The phone keeps ringing.

His face gets even redder, which I didn’t know was possible. I can tell the ringing is annoying him because he’s lost his train of thought.

“ANSWER IT!” he demands.

I can practically see the steam coming out of his ears.

A few of the guys are smirking. They always seem to enjoy it when Matheson yells at me.

None of them would ever stand up to him. Their dads all got them their jobs and they wouldn’t want it getting back to the people that fund their boys’ weekends and their trust funds.

I thought this company would be a way to get ahead without college, but right now it just feels like being the punching bag for someone who desperately needs therapy.

“Hello?” I plug my other ear.

A female voice asks if my name is Millie.

“This is she.”

At this point it could be a telemarketer and I’d take it.

I can feel Matheson staring daggers at me. He raises his eyebrows as if to sayhurry up so I can continue projecting my personal issues onto you.

“Hi Millie,” the woman says. “I’m calling to let you know that the team has reviewed your application, and you’ve been selected to join the cast for the next season ofSweet Romance.”

“Seriously?” I walk toward the exit so I can hear better.

I wonder if maybe it’s a scammer. I look to see if Leila is laughing at me — she’s always loved a good prank — but she’s typing away.

“Seriously.” The woman laughs. “If you accept, we’ll be flying you out to The Bahamas as soon as possible to begin filming. We’ve got all your details here, so we’ll send a car to take you to the airport. I’ll send you an email with the tickets and any further details.”

She speaks so fast; I can’t get a word in.

I try to take in what she’s saying.

This can’t be real. What about my application made them call me back so quickly?

I chime in with vague agreeing noises as the woman lists a few more details.

She pauses. “One more thing to bear in mind — if you quit the show at any point then the participation fee will not be payable.”

Well, that got my attention.

I’m fully aware of all the annoyed eyes waiting for me to get off the phone so I can continue to be yelled at, so I want to drag the phone call out as long as possible.

The woman continues. “I know it’s a lot to take in, but we’re on a time crunch. You can take the afternoon to think about it if you need to, but I will ask you now, do you accept this offer?”

I gnaw on the ends of my nails. A bad habit of mine lately.

I know that Matheson won’t let me take any time off. He will probably fire me for requesting it. I can see him pacing back and forth out of the corner of my eye. At this point that might be a blessing in disguise.

I can keep scrimping and saving money, but it’s only going to get me so far. I quickly weigh up my options. It does seem like the universe is pushing me in this direction. It’s unorthodox, but it could be exactly what I need.

I feel a bit shellshocked. It’s no longer hypothetical. I must genuinely consider if it’s worth putting myself through the ordeal of being on a reality TV show.
