“Who’s Isis?” I ask.
“She was a mouse who was killed a few years ago,” Lucy explains.
All the blood drains from my face and I quickly grab the pack of cigarettes. I’ve never smoked, but I bet I need one after that.
“Brute, the guy who killed her, was an absolutely horrible man,” Davina explains. “There was a call for retribution.”
“By who? The girls?” I ask as I light the cigarette. It’s much easier than the joint and doesn’t taste nearly as bad. Still, unpleasant, but it takes the edge off.
“No, by Gunner,” DeeDee says.
My eyes widen. Xander? Why did he—
“There’s a rule within the club. If there’s an issue between bikers, they settle it with their fists and the last man standing wins.”
“So who won?” I ask, curious about this outcome.
“Obviously, it was Gunner. He’s still alive, isn’t he?”
Oh. Oh! That’s what they mean bylast man standing. Xander won because he’s alive, which means…
“He killed that guy?” I ask. I have no clue why this is such a surprise to me. I already knew about Xander being a biker and bikers are criminals, but I never thought of blood being on his hands.
“It’s a kill or be killed situation and my son did the right thing. Isis was new, barely eighteen, and she didn’t deserve to go the way she did. It’s one of the reasons a lot of the guys have no respect for him. He fought Brute for one of us,” Davina adds, her face covered in sadness.
“The only one who got their place out of sheer dumb luck is Davina. She just happened to become pregnant by Browning while being turned. After that, he put the word out that only the top five were allowed to touch her,” Lucy says, nodding her head toward Davina.
“Dumb luck is right.” Davina takes a big swig of her beer.
“You’re in a similar position with Gunner. Use it wisely.” Roxy presses her finger into the table to accentuate her point.
“What? No, I’m not. I haven’t been—“
“Do you have any idea how the hierarchy of the club works, Laura?” She gives me a pointed look, her eyebrows burrowing with meaning. “There’s the top five. Number one, the President, which is Browning. The Vice President, which is Gunner. The Treasurer, Pipe. The Sergeant at Arms, Chucky. Finally, the next in line to be Sergeant at Arms, which is Crack. The women who belong to the top five are called Untouchables. Do you know why that is?”
Her tone scares me, but I don’t speak.
“No one can touch them. Hell, if they aren’t one of the top five, they can’t even look in their direction.” DeeDee fills in the blank.
“Bingo!” Roxy points at me. “Every woman in this club, excluding Davina for obvious reasons, would kill to be in your position. You have hit the motherload and you’re just sitting around, throwing it away. This isyourlife we’re talking about. You may be young, but that doesn’t mean you have to be stupid about it.”
“She’s right. Gunner obviously likes you or he wouldn’t have asked Browning to give you to him. Plus, the way he looks at you…chef’s kiss.” Roxy sends me an all-knowing smile. Okay, is she jealous of the attention Xander gives me or is she actually trying to help me? I can’t tell. Maybe both.
I go back over what she said and I feel my brain explode. That’s why Xander left me with Davina in the kitchen. I thought he was dealing with business, but I was wrong. He faced his father, who he hates, and put his ego aside…for me.
Oh, Xander.
“Do you want to turn into DeeDee, treated and fucked like a whore every single day, sometimes beaten like one, too?” Roxy presses, her eyes softening.
Maybe she knows she’s freaking me out.
“No, of course not.”
“Do you want my advice then?”
Not sure if I’ll use it but… “Yes.” My voice shakes as I put out the cigarette in my hand. Still buzzed, and yet, I’m more scared than I’ve ever been. This conversation is going to irrevocably change my life forever, maybe even the rest of my time with Xander.
“When it comes to this life, you take a biker’s weakness and exploit it. Give them what they really need. When it comes to Xander, he needs someone to protect. Be his little damsel and, for the love ofGod, fuck him already!”
