“Wherever you want. I’m taking my first vacation. Now, get dressed before I drag you out the door like this.”

He would never do that, but it would be fun to see him try to convince himself it’s a good idea. I jump off the couch and hurry back to the bedroom, not caring at all that my ass is on full view.

I’m not sure if our destination will be North or South so I pack for either and I’m almost done when my phone rings on the nightstand.

There are only two people who have my phone number and one of them walks in as the phone rings.

“Why is Gillian calling me?” I ask to no one in particular as I click the green button and put it to my ear. “Hey, Gilly. Can I call you back in a few? I’m in the middle of packing a bag.”

“Hey, sis. This won’t take long.” Her voice sounds so drained and weak, I freeze.

“What’s wrong?” I stop moving as I hear her sniffling.

“Don’t mind the way I sound. I’ve just gone through a rollercoaster of emotions. I just found out I’m pregnant.”

My expression pales as my mouth falls open, not sure if I can believe what she is saying. My sister, after having sex with Xander a few weeks ago and spending weeks before that screwing his father, is pregnant. Oh, fuck. What if it’s Xander’s? This is just a complication we don’t need and she’s probably all freaked out about it as well.

“You? You’re…” My hand falls over my mouth as I struggle to get my thoughts organized. Xander’s eyes track my movements, catching onto my signs of distress. “Was it–”

“Catch your breath, sister. It’s not Grumpy Cat’s fetus. I was already pregnant when that happened…At least, that’s the case if you trust ultrasounds. Trust me, I’m kinda wishing that was the case or that I got pregnant right after Donatello and I got back together. With this baby’s father being who he is and me being his or her mother, I’ll be raising a future serial killer.”

A loud, long breath leaves me as the relief washes through me. At least the baby isn’t Xander’s. That would be a nightmare.

“One, don’t scare me like that. Two, don’t make jokes like that! The last thing I need to be picturing is baby serial killers.”

Xander looks like he wants to laugh and I scowl at him.

“For all you know, it could be perfectly normal. I was raised in the same house as you and—”

“And you put three mob goons in the hospital. Case in point.”

I roll my eyes. “Yeah, okay, but all parents screw up their kids in one way or another.”

“Touche,” she mumbles before yawning. “I’ll let you get back to what you’re doing. I just wanted to let you know, but please, don’t tell Browning. I don’t want him to know, ever. I guess my maternal instincts are kicking in and I just want to protect my baby.”

“Of course, I won’t tell him, but I have to tell Xander. He's giving me some pretty suspicious looks already.”

Xander huffs.

“Alright. Don’t play the old Russian Roulette with your birth control. Remember the curse,” she jokes, but it leaves a knot forming in my stomach.

The family curse. Shit.

Gillian and I say goodbye and I end the call.

“Well? You have something you need to tell me,” Xander mutters as he crosses his arms.

“Before I tell you what it is, I’m saying it’s not yours so you don’t freak out.” And the suspicious looks intensify. “Gillian just found out she’s pregnant and she said don’t tell Dennis because it’s his. She also mentioned Russian Roulette with birth control and I have no idea what that means, but it has to do with our family curse.”

His eyes narrow as he watches me move around the room, grabbing the things I need for this trip.

“You have a family curse?”

“So says my mother and every other woman in my family since the dawn of time, but I don’t believe in it. It’s so stupid.” Really, I’m freaking out from the mention of it, but Xander doesn’t need to know just yet.

“What’s the curse?” He takes a seat on the edge of the bed, giving me his full attention. I can tell he doesn’t give a shit about Gillian’s pregnancy, only what this curse has to do with me.

“That women in our family get knocked up in pairs.”

Now, he looks white as a ghost, but I calm him down with a kiss.

“Don’t worry. Curses aren’t real.” I laugh before heading into the bathroom. “I’m gonna pee, then we can go.” I close the door and let my panic set in as I reach under the sink, finding my toiletry bag packed with tampons, which I haven’t used since right after I arrived here, and an unopened box of pregnancy tests.

I rip open the box and force down my panties to pee on the stick. I know if I take the full five minutes, Xander will know something is up and ask questions so I shove the capped test back in my toiletry bag and zip it up. Grabbing my shampoo and the bag, I leave the bathroom and shove all of it in my suitcase.

“Ready, Sunshine?” He throws me an excited smile and I know, if that test comes back positive, everything will change. Every single thing.
