“Sorry,” he shrugs, and takes a drink of his cocktail like it’s not a big deal. “Nice to see you though. You look hot.”

Wish I could say the same.

“Thanks,” I mumble and look everywhere but at him, looking for someone that might get me out of this interaction and… wait. The resort is reserved for close family and friends of Matt and Melanie. “Uh… what are you doing here?”

Before he can answer, we’re interrupted by Jack’s wife, Mayzie, looking radiant in her iced mint colored dress.

“Ian, what are you doing harassing Matt’s sister?” she asks, playfully stern, but his jaw drops when those two key words drop on him.

“You’re… Matt’s sister?” He turns his head between me and Mayzie. I raise an eyebrow and nod while Mayzie’s joking smile starts to slip.

“Yeah, she is, smart person. What’s going on here? I obviously missed something,” she places her hands on her hips and looks between us.

“How do you know Ian?” I ask hiking my thumb at the man/boy.

“Unfortunately, he’s my brother,” she informs with a huff. “So how do you know him?”

“Oh, we met on a dating app and went on a date last week,” I fill her in. “He made quite the impression.” I cross my arms and leave that to interpretation. Mayzie’s a smart cookie and draws the right conclusions. She rolls her eyes skyward and drops her head back for a moment before righting herself and reaching up to biff her brother across the top of the head with an audible smack.

“Hey!” he protests, rubbing the spot on the top of his head. “You don’t even know anything that happened.”

“I don’t have to. Kasey,” she turns to me with a look of sincerity, “I want to deeply apologize that you were subjected to an evening with this clueless, immature tool box, and if it’s any consolation, you dodged a bullet.”

“Thought so,” I roll my eyes and nod with a faint smile.

“Really, he’s a child in a man’s body, and get this, he lives with two roommates.”

Oh Lord in Heaven.

“What the fuck, Maze?” He turns to her, shouting like a toddler.

“Save it, Peter Pan. Head on home to Neverland and your lost boys.”

“Un-fucking-believable,” he mumbles with a headshake as he huffs away from us.

Mayzie and I share an amused giggle as he saunters away.

“Was I too hard on him?” she asks, turning to me.

“Nah, I’d say you were just the right amount,” I nod.

“I’m so sorry you went out with him. He’s actually a really good brother, but he’s the lousiest boyfriend I’ve ever had the displeasure of seeing in action. Ugghh,” she sticks out her tongue like she’s got a bad taste in her mouth.

“Well, rest assured, he finished the evening with my drink in his lap.”

“Nice!” She high fives me. “And I’ll have a talk with him. It will be the fortieth one, but still…”

“Sounds good,” I laugh as she pats my arm and turns to walk towards her husband who’s waving at her. I reset my sights on the cake table when I’m stopped by another person approaching me.

Ben

Melanie finishes her dance with Chris, and after looking around a second, spots me and her face lights up in a way that can only mean trouble. She bounces in place as she gives me a goofy pleading smile and hooks her fingers, doing a pulling motion with her arms.

Fuck.

I set my drink down and lazily stroll over to her. When I’m near enough, she asks, “Dance with me?”

“Ewww,” I respond dropping my head back which earns me a swat to the bicep and I give in, assume the position and start swaying with her.
