On the right, is another one from our wedding, only in this one, I have one arm around Kasey and the other around Luna as she beams in her purple bridesmaid dress that Kasey let her pick out with no question.

While we were in the planning stages of our wedding, Kasey and I worked together to come up with the best idea for my professional future. Treating Luna after her accident definitely shook me, but not in the worst way. I spent hours to months reliving that day, and realized how much I really did like helping people and practicing medicine. Going back to emergency medicine however, seemed like a different world, a different person; a different life. That wasn’t who I was now.

After a lot of consideration and talking it over with the woman I love, it was concluded that outpatient was the way to go, and so I started my own family practice, and I don’t have a single regret. It’s fulfilling, I don’t bring home stress, and I work the hours that are perfectly conducive to coming home to my family at a decent hour, and coaching my daughter’s basketball team.

Speaking of which, I realize I better finish up with this last chart so that I can make it on time.

After finally pushing through and finishing, I push to my feet just as there as a soft knock on my door. A beautiful brunette woman with sparkling blue eyes walks in, carrying a just as beautiful baby that I actually got to deliver two months ago.

“Hi there,” I greet her before putting on a display of fake ignorance. “Who’s this? Does he need a checkup?” I reach out to the tiny bundle with cloudy but curious eyes and a soft layer of light brown hair on his head.

“This, as you know, is Matthew Daniel,” Kasey gives me a smirk as I cuddle him to my chest. “And he’s perfectly fine.”

“How was your day, babe?” I ask as I lean in to kiss my wife.

“Good. I got a good ten-minute ice soak in, and then Tori watched Matthew while I took an appointment at the salon and got groceries, and your daughter has already finished her homework and is playing Sudoku on my phone while she waits for us in the truck,” she answers cheerfully. Happiness and confidence are plain to see all over her face, and they sound loud and clear in her voice. The explosively warm pang I get in my chest at the mention of my daughter never gets old. Pair that with the feeling of my baby boy cradled in my arms, and my cup is so full, it’s overflowing.

“Almost game time,” the ref shoulder bumps me as he walks by, and I look up from my clipboard to lay eyes on my team of fifth-grade girls. Yeah, I know. Who’d have thought, blah blah blah.

My eyes fall to the back of Luna’s green jersey with the name Isaak and #19, and the side of my mouth pulls up as she snuggles Matthew while her teammates crowd around her and fawn all over how cute her baby brother is. I toss my clipboard down on the bench and cross my arms, taking in the scene. My life is full and complete, and the best part about it is that it in no way takes away from the one I had with Jamie, and that in no way takes away from this one. They’re just different lives; different times. And I’m lucky to have a wife and family that not only fully understand and respect that, but value and love that as a part of who I am.

As Kasey makes her way over to the crowd of girls to relieve Luna of the baby, I think for the millionth time how I’ll never deserve her, but that won’t stop me from spending the rest of my life trying. We smile and wink at each other, a gesture that means a thousand words between us, before I put my game face on.

“Alright, Superstars!” I address my team as they gather towards me. “Let’s get to work!”

The End
