I nervously turn her towards me and place a hand on her waist while hers rests on my arm, the warmth seeping right through the material of my shirt into my skin.

“So should we play the cliché how do you know the bride and groom thing?” She snickers up at me and I can’t help but feel the corners of my mouth tug.

“Sure, why not?”

“Okay. Well you’re obviously Melanie’s friend,” she baits with a raised eyebrow, cueing me to finish the statement.

“Yeah, we met over in Indonesia. I kind of flew in last minute, as you saw,” I attempt a self-deprecating smirk and she chuckles.

“Yeah, as I saw. But even without that entrance, I know you’re not from Matt’s side so,”

“Ah, so you are obviously from Matt’s side then,” I nod in understanding.

“He’s my brother,” she states, looking up at me, the pride she feels for her brother evident in her gaze.

Oh.

When Melanie hastily took off to return to the states, she didn’t tell me the whole story, but Matt’s sister was mentioned as one of the reasons she had left in the first place. I don’t let on that I know anything, considering the situation.

“Oh, so what’s it like being related to a rock star then?” I turn us around before continuing to sway to the slow music. It was something I’ve never gotten around to asking Melanie about being Jack’s sister, and I’ll admit, I still can’t wrap my head around it.

She looks to the ceiling with a soft smile, lifting one bare shoulder before looking back to me.

“I’m not going to lie, it’s pretty cool,” she smiles, and I find myself looking at her lips for some reason. They’re smooth and full and a beautiful pink color. God, have I been living under a rock for that long that I’m checking out someone’s lips? I either need to get out more, or crawl back under said rock.

“I can imagine,” I weakly volley back. “So, what do you do?”

“Hair,” she nods confidently up at me.

“Hair?”

“Yeah. I assume you meant for a living. I do hair.”

“Oh… got it. You look like you enjoy it,” I observe the way she’s lit up.

“I really do. It’s something I always loved, and I finally get to do it.”

“Finally?” I raise an eyebrow, seeking clarification.

“Yeah,” a slight shadow falls across her face and I can see her trying to fight it off with some kind ofwhat are you going to dosmile. “I had my daughter pretty young, and when that happens, you have to focus on what your child needs rather than what you want, so you take a decent paying job where you can get one.”

“It’s the mark of a good parent,” I assure her, and I feel a need to pull her back to the bright side. “I saw her at the wedding. Where is she now?”

“Upstairs in our hotel room with my mom. There are no other kids her age here so it’s kind of boring for her. My mom and stepdad live in Arizona and don’t see her much, so my mom took her for the rest of the night to soak her up. I’m sure they’re ordering ice cream from room service and watching a Disney marathon about now.” I can’t help but enjoy the way her eyes crinkle when she giggles at the thought. It seems to make me smile inside which almost feels just a little too good. I pull my eyes away just in time for them to catch a glimpse of something shiny on her wrist of the hand I’m holding.

“That’s a nice bracelet,” I comment, of the blue and silver beads that follow a pattern around her delicate wrist.

“My daughter made it,” she says, with a smile that lights up her face.

“Are you serious?” She nods sweetly. She’s obviously crazy about her kid and what she can do. “How old is she?” I lean back looking at her again.

“She just turned nine,” she replies, adoration clear in her voice.

“Wow, I can’t believe a nine-year-old did this,” I look at her bracelet again, and this time I catch a glint from a shiny silver charm dangling on it against Kasey’s satiny skin.

And fuck me.

It’s a shooting star.
