“Megan,” he said in a frustrated groan. Then he looked to the side, to a door they’d stopped in front of. The next thing she knew, his hand was on her back, gently but firmly drawing her into a conference room lit only by the late afternoon sun coming through less palatial windows than the banquet room. He closed the door behind them.

Her heartbeat skipped up two levels. He moved his hand away from her back, but now he was holding her forearm, keeping her close. “Megan,” he said again. “In all these days I’ve known you—for years, in fact—you have never told me whatyouwant.”

“I have too!” she protested. “I want everyone to be happy.”

He shook his head again, but this time, finally, he smiled. “That is a fine ideal, but I want to know what you want foryourself. You helped with the fundraiser because that is whatIwanted. You fixed the website because that was whatEttawanted. You told me you did not want to see me because that was whatyour brotherwanted.”

“No, that—”

“Megan.”

She closed her eyes. She might have moaned as well. When she opened them, he was right there, right in front of her, his hand now cupping her upper arm. She could feel his breath on her suddenly dry lips. “What doyouwant?”

She dropped her purse, freeing up her other hand so she could put it around his neck. Alessandro put his arms around her waist, and now she was where she’d wanted to be for years: pressed against the most beautiful, kindest man she’d ever met.

And all she could do was close the inches between them and kiss his waiting mouth.

Chapter 9

Dio mio. Alessandro couldn’t believe she’d answered him like this. He hadn’t meant to set her up, but God, he was thrilled to feel her waist beneath his hands, to have her lips on his, taking exactly what she wanted.

She was just as he’d imagined: soft and firm and hot and cool. Her knees buckled; he caught her, relishing the weight of her in his arms at last. Megan’s head fell back, and he followed her, diving into her mouth, flattening his hand on her back to support her. God, she felt perfect.

But this was about her. “Cara,” he whispered against her lips when he could take a breath. “This is what you want?” He moved to her cheek. “This?” He kissed her under her ear. “This?” He trailed his lips down the cord in her neck, and she shivered. “This?”

“Yes,” she breathed. “All of it.”

“Anch’io,” he said against the curve of her neck and shoulder. “For so long.”

Megan shivered again. He bussed her skin, then let his tongue dart out, leaving a wet mark and eliciting a moan from her that made him laugh.

Since he had most of her weight already, he bent down and swept her into his arms. She gave a small “eep!” and he turned fast to stop her long legs from hitting the wall. He carried her the few steps to one of the comfortable conference chairs beside them, settling himself with all of Megan’s beautiful, lithe body tucked onto his lap.

Better. Also, thank God he’d been keeping up with his workouts. Of course he could have carried her out of a burning building if he had to, but his exercises were certainly useful for taking this beautiful, smart, funny woman into his arms.

He kissed her again, letting their tongues play, before finding the spot on her neck again and nuzzling it. Megan groaned.

“That is my favorite sound in the entire world,” he said against her skin.

She ducked away from him, and the next thing he knew, he was the one groaning as she found a spot behind his beard and below his ear. How did she know that was one of his most erogenous zones?Hehadn’t even known that. The effect of her lips made him shift in his seat, as though that would stop her from knowing how badly she was turning him on.

Megan laughed, low and sexual. She backed up and touched his beard with her fingers, outlining its shape. “Such a difference,” she said. “You grow beards fast.”

“Sicilian blood,” he said. “I drive my makeup artists crazy.”

Her fingers moved down to his lips, so Alessandro did what he’d wanted to do the other night: he captured one precious tip in his mouth and touched it with his tongue.

“Gah!” she said, but then she offered another finger. Alessandro obliged. Megan sighed and dropped her head onto his shoulder.

After he’d made love to each of her fingers with his mouth, he kept her hand in his and put them in her lap. For a moment, they sat in silence. Alessandro could feel Megan’s heart rate slow to normal.

“This,” she said, “is going to get complicated.”

“Mm.”

After another silence, he felt brave enough to say, “It could be worth it.”
